A peek into another age

Reissued in 1979, this 1889 Victorian handbook is filled with practical advice. The illustrations are helpful and show valance ideas I've never seen before. The conversational tone of the advice is easy to follow and charming at the same time. One gets the feeling of the expert chatting over your shoulder. I am planning to use one of the suggestions to help solve a particularly troublesome window space. Even if you find the advice and instruction outdated, the book is a delightful conversation piece and collectable.

A great quick read, and something different.

Funnily enough I read this short work at 3am whilst suffering from a brief episode of insomnia myself. It was the perfect story to read in that dark quiet hour of the night. I loved the Hare and Somnus, especially Somnus, though his time on stage in the story was brief, he was an interesting character. I particularly enjoyed the slow reveal of main character Michael's troubles. It's the type of short story I'd like to return to one day (or night).

Worthy of Wonderland

I'm a sucker for Alice reimaginings, and while this story does not take us for a romp through Wonderland, it does give us a glimpse of something just as surreal. Ashley presents us with Michael, a man faced with insomnia, who gets some help from the March Hare and Somnus, the God of Sleep. It was a delight following this little tale down the hole and out the other side.

I’ve really come to enjoy Ashley Capes’ quirky style of writing!

A despondent Michael, floundering after the death of his wife, does a deal with Somnus, the God of sleep.

Somnus and the March Hare is a weird and wonderful short story with quirky characters, filled with magical realism and written in Ashley Capes’ unique style.

I would have liked a bit more background on Michael’s circumstances.

A Good Introductory Book

This is a good introductory book written at the undergraduate level. A lot of the material at the beginning is the same as found in many other signal processing books, like the Fourier Transform and its properties, extended to two dimensions. I would have liked to see some concrete examples of transforms and convolutions when the subjects are introduced, rather than the usual stock pules responses. Other than that, the book helped me out.

Excellent framework for evolving your sales org

TL;DR ("Too Long, Didn't Read"): super useful, easy to digest lessons for how to be a better sales manager.

I've had the good fortune of working with Elay at both Salesforce.com while he was Global Head of Sales Productivity, and now as CEO of SalesHood - he has taken a tremendous number of lessons learned from his experience and codified them into a great series of learnings that can help any sales manager improve their team's performance.

Elay has been a great partner for Optimizely to evolve our selling framework, and many of the lessons contained in this book have already shown a marked increase in performance as our team grows.

Really thoughtful approach to Sales 3.0

SalesHood's approach to developing a scaling sales team is a dead on - the frontline sales manager/mentor is king. I've witnessed multiple orgs outstretch their abilities by failing to focus on the individual training needs of their team. Conversely, I've seen winning sales teams multiply their successes by aligning the frontline managers around a cohesive mentorship strategy.

Cohen makes this point exceedingly clear and has the data and street cred to back it up. A must read for any sales leadership team.

This is a good book that is well laid out, BUT there are more editing mistakes, inconsistencies and misprints throughout that make it difficult to teach and learn from. Perhaps another edition would be worth my time and money. Good luck with that.

About the Author

Elena is a lecturer in Criminology at Middlesex University. Her research includes the analysis of online sex offending, online sexual abuse, children online behaviour and police practice in this area. She collaborates with a number of national and international agencies and works closely with the London Metropolitan Police.
