About the Author
Kelcey Parker's first book, For Sale By Owner (Kore Press, 2011), won the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Award in Short Fiction and was a Finalist for the 2012 Best Books of Indiana. She directs the creative writing program at Indiana University South Bend. During the summer of 2012, she worked as an Ask-Me Guide at Fallingwater where she asked as many questions as she answered, helped visitors get the perfect photo of Fallingwater, and always kept an eye out for Liliane's ghost. Most recently, she is the author of LILIANE'S BALCONY (Rose Metal Press, 2013).

Liliane Kaufman's Fallingwater remains a testament to her collaboration with Frank Lloyd Wright. Parker, like thousands before her has been haunted by "the illusion of water coursing through the house, and Liliane's over sailing balcony." Parker winds the story of faithful Liliane with chapters following a group of tourists through the house. The austere overarching beauty of this home cannot but help calling to mind the lives of those who lived there. Liliane always knew that her husband loved other women, and she often suffered through her days on her balcony. This a spare lovely book without the extraneous clutter of unneeded words. Yet this prose brings the lines of the home to the mind's eye with these simple phrases. It is a book I recommend highly.

Water and rock...and flesh

Lilliane’s Balcony is the literary equivalent of nouvelle cuisine: superbly constructed and elegantly arranged morsels that deliver their exacting flavor without the heavy sauces of gobbledygook or extraneous prose. Metaphor is the basis of both form and style here, with layers of relevance in each deceptively simple snippet of story. Consider: “She must have floated across the stony platform. How else could she be here at its edge….That edge marks the point of transformation from stream to spray, from slipsong to scream.”
The balcony of the Frank Lloyd Wright house at FallingWater is the stage setting for the individual and collective dramas each of the characters feels, relives, or imagines as an accident brings them to the cusp of self-realization, and evokes a ghost from the past. How can the vision of the architect be so powerful? Kelcey Parker uses the interior thoughts and perceptions of her random group of characters to reveal a connection as fundamental as water and rock…and flesh. “It is dark, it is dark. She hears his body as if through a stethoscope—the echo of his breath, the rushing liquid of what must be his blood. Now his stomach acid will dissolve her and her plans into nothing….The man’s ribs are the bars of a prison. ‘Let me out! Let me out!’ she calls to the man.”
The fictional stories are interwoven with the factual history of Lilliane Kaufman, first owner of the house. Her life and death at FallingWater, excerpts of letters between her husband and her, and quotes from the architect himself provide structure and insight as past meets present. The house and its setting are depicted with detail and Parker breathes such life into them that FallingWater becomes a main character, a major actor on a stage of its own making. The poetry of Goethe is interspersed in both German and translation into English, providing yet another layer to contemplate as you experience this wonderful book. As the architect said: “And POETRY? Why poetry in anything is only the song at the heart of it—and in the nature of it….You will have something of the song that aches in the heart of all of us for release.”

Excellent Work

I came to this book by a review that talked about some interesting things writers were doing with flash fiction. I was really looking forward to it. On that point, I am a little disappointed, as only a couple of these are actually what I would call "flash fiction". What we have here is more akin to what we have in Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying” which is, connected point-of-view pictures from many different characters, that come together to tell a story.
That minor quibble with another reviewer aside, I really liked this book. It brings Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous design to life, and the house almost becomes its own character. We are shuttled through time and place, and surrounded by vivid and emotive pictures from the lives, and loves, of the people for whom he built the house, and others who are just experiencing it.
It is, at its heart, I think, a tale of the many promises of love, and what happens when they begin to fall away, like water rushing under a great house, over the edge, and down the hill into the dark wood.
