An Awesome Read

I never expected Ivy to bear her soul as she did in this piece of her life. I know this was a healing process for her and I certainly hope she can now move on with her successful life's work and her family. What a wonderful husband she has to allow her the numerous and sometimes lengthly trips to NYC for her visits with her mother! The concentration on Flight 111 is technical but finally answers the question of "why" these souls were lost. The whole episode could have been prevented if the code was followed. Ivy was a childhood beach friend of mine and Patty my older sister's friend. Our parents were friends. I never realized the agony Ivy must have been going through growing up as we always had fun together. There were a lot of rules for her, though. Her Dad was a hoot and always had the most wonderful vegetable garden which he doted over.

No new ground

As just an average reader, I found this memoir sour and incomplete. The author discloses family secrets -- her mother's hoarding, her mother's rages, her sister's hoarding, her sister's insecurity, her uncle's mental illness -- but doesn't seem to have a lot of insight into herself or her family. Sharing her bowel problems is not the same as sharing her emotions. There's no epiphany, no catharsis that might help others deal with grief or understand difficult families better. There's no new ground here. It wasn't a bad book; it just wasn't really worth my time.
