About the Author

YONG ZHAO holds the first presidential chair at the University of Oregon, where he also serves as associate dean for global education and professor in the Department of Educational Measurement, Policy, and Leadership. Excellent book! It is a must read for those who care about our children, our education and the future!

Yong Zhao's books are the few attractive books that I wanted to finish reading without a break. As a student came from China, I have been trained to be submissive and meeting other people's need. I came from the system, but never had a chance to take a close look at it, or question it. This book gives me a great opportunity to reexamine the education I have received, and grants me a more clear understanding of myself. It helped me to rethink the definition of being a good student or being successful.

In addition, I believe that this book is even more helpful to the whole educational system in America now. I remember that Dr. Zhao once said that, "World Class Learner" is the book tells people what should be done, and this book tells people what should not be done. I believe this book has done the work successfully. "Practice is the only criterion for testing truth." Therefore, I believe that the best way to tell whether or not a practice or a policy works is to look around the world to see whether or not it worked out in those countries that tried it before. Many educational policies in today's America have already been practiced in China for hundreds of years, such as standardization and high-stake testing. If those policies do not work out in China, or the side effects are bigger than their benefits, why should people believe miracle would happen in America?

However, as a student who studies education in America, I sadly found that people do believe there would be a miracle, because very often when people discuss about a practice or a policy, they lack a global view and they have been restricted by thinking locally. Therefore, I believe the importance of Dr. Zhao's voice cannot be overstated in today's America.

This book offers a succinct overview of the folly in America's education Sinophilia. By analyzing the keju, the gaokao, and the attempts to reform the Chinese university admissions process, Zhao argues that an emphasis on high stakes tests is responsible for China's failure to innovate and invent at a rate that is in keeping with its economic growth, large population, and history of revering academics. He also illustrates the shortsightedness of using PISA scores as the primary means of evaluating an education system; and suggests that a test-driven education system is more likely to produce a populace that defers to authority than a populace capable of creativity and disruption.

A system based on creativity could just as easily mystify a rewards system based on inequality

This is an interesting polemic attack on the current US obsession with standardised testing and the arguably myopic and detrimental ways in which it determines policy at federal and state levels. At the heart of this obsession, Yong argues, is an unthinking and uncritical desire to compete with China on China's terms, capitulating rather than questioning the Confucian spirit behind it's centralised curriculum and its reliance on standardised testing to determine merit. This is certainly a provocative and stimulating read for anyone interested in federal education policy. However, I must depart from the other commendatory reviews and take issue with the author's very simplistic and unhistorical generalisations about the Chinese Imperial examination and the ways it has allegedly shaped modern education practices in China. His largely derisive picture of the Imperial curriculum (keju) is made solely at the level of assertion without any critical historical analysis. The book fails to consider adequately how European curricula were shaped by a classical humanistic tradition that, in its emphasis on memorisation of core texts, were not dissimilar to some of the intellectual visions that shaped the Chinese system. I'm afraid the author is too quick to idolise "American individualism", which leads him to some vacuous platitudes about creativity and freedom that I don't think has any real practical value when considering what students in an American classroom need to know and how their learning should be evaluated. Yong doesn't adequately consider the principle of meritocracy, which underpinned a theory of the Imperial Examination (regardless of how it was abused in practical terms). How would Yong purport to evaluate "creativity" in a systematic way that is fair across the board? A system based on creativity could just as easily mystify a rewards system based on inequality, privilege, and lazy teaching by empty justifications like "uniqueness", "X-factor"; and "thinking outside boxes". Such platitudes and an unnecessarily stark contrast between Chinese stagnation and American vitalism is not only erroneous in the terms of historical analysis. It is also detrimental in education policy, allowing us to hide behind stereotypes in order to avoid asking more pertinent questions about what skills our students need to navigate life outside of educational institutions and how to ensure that they are delivered in an equitable, accessible, and yes, standardised manner.

Now, It's the Best Out There and Mandatory

I have taught introductory writing and literature courses for decades now. "Literature and the Writing Process", through its many incarnations, has always been a very good textbook. I was expecting the same calibre when I heard a 9th edition was coming out. When I received my instructor's copy, however, I was pleasantly surprised by the several updates. My one complaint about the book previously was that I felt that McMahan, et al. should lighten it up. What I mean by that was that the book, like others, was fairly humorless. With the new section on satire, parody and light verse, I have been relieved of the duty of photocopying samples of this style and genre. I am even considering using this as a supplemental text for my Humor and Literature class. Good work, guys!

I was surprised and pleased to learn that there was so much packed into this book! Complete poems, short stories, plays, and lots of short biographies about the writers of the works within the book. My only complaint is that the text is very small and sometimes hard to read.

De Haven and Jensen have gotten Neuromancer off to a screaming start. It starts with a dark street in a dark city, with Case looking for a place where everyone's an outsider, so he can get drunk among people with at least that much in common. A deal went bad, and the bad guys scorched his brain in revenge. He can think and feel well enough, but they cut him off forever from what he lived for: the Matrix. It's the electronic astral plane where adepts project their spirits, to live out dramas and intrigues realer than real.

Then someone offers him a chance to return - for a price.

This thin volume begins the adaptation of Gibson's epochal novel. Gibson himself introduces this volume, and says that it captures the mood and feel that he tried to embody in words. It's a fair effort, even if the art isn't world-class, but leaves me wishing for the unwritten sequels that would have rendered the rest of the original book.

The story is great it's the art I have a problem with

I really enjoy the book Neuromancer, and was really excited when I found a copy of the graphic novel in a used book store in my home town. Since it was sealed I could not look inside until I got home. I must say I was truly dissapointed with the poor art work. I realize the story is the thing, but I bought a graphic novel for the graphics, I already have the text version, and would have stuck with it had I known the art work would be so bad. There is no excuse for a novel of such high quality to have such a low standard of art. While the street scenes and inside scenes looked good the people were lacking. I thought that the character Molly Millions was drawn especially poorly. She looks like Sylvester Stallone in drag most of the time. I am sorry to say this graphic novel was a dissapointment.

If you like SF, specially the cyberpunk branch, this book is a must. Case, a Netrunner (who cannot jack in the net due some neural damage) is hired to do another run, to crack an ICE, to get into Tessier-Ashpools data...
Gibson's world is vivid, and he takes us trough lot of scenarios, all of them decadent, and all of them possible these days: Night CIty in Japan, Istambul, An spacial station full of Rastafarian guys (The sionites), Ashpool the last of the true magnats in the world...
And the personages are all interestng: Molly, a bodyguard (a razon-girl) with some kind of mirrorshades instead of eyes, Ratz: a bartender with a russian plastic arm, and even the AI's.
I liked it very much, and it's avery good introduction tho the cyberpunk world, that has been partially showed to us with films like "Johnny Mnemonic" or "Lawnmower", and the recent released "The Matrix"
just a comment. The term "CYBERSPACE" first appeared in this novel

About the Author

Robert W. Kolb holds two Ph.D.’s from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (philosophy 1974, finance 1978) and has been a finance professor at five universities. He is currently a professor of finance at Loyola University Chicago, where he also holds the Considine Chair of Applied Ethics.

Kolb's recent writings include Futures, Options, and Swaps 5e , and Understanding Futures Markets 6e, both co-authored with James A. Overdahl. Recent edited volumes are: Lessons from the Financial Crisis: Causes, Consequences, and Our Economic Future, Sovereign Debt: From Safety to Default, and Financial Contagion: The Viral Threat to the Wealth of Nations, both published by Wiley. Kolb's most recent books are The Financial Crisis of Our Time (2011) and Too Much Is Not Enough: Incentives in Executive Compensation (2012), both published by Oxford University Press and both selected for the Financial Management Association's Survey and Synthesis Series.

I just finished reading "The Natural Gas Revolution: At the Pivot of the World's Energy Future," by Robert W. Kolb. Once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down. It's a masterpiece of scholarship and writing on a subject I have been eager to better understand. This is a must-read for the politician, investor, scientist, voter.

This book gives a great overview of the current state of the natural gas market. It explains in a very understandable manner all about fracking, horizontal drilling etc. A very good introduction to the so called natural gas revolution. You feel that it is a very objective description of the subject.

... my advent reading with my kids and am so glad I found this version

I was looking for a book about the Little Drummer Boy to add to my advent reading with my kids and am so glad I found this version!! I wanted more than just the song lyrics with pictures as the repetitive "pa rum pum pum pum" was not something I wanted to keep reading. This book had more content to enhance the lyrics as you read a story about a boy traveling with his drum. As you read, the words in the lyrics were in bold italic so you knew it was the song. That was absolutely perfect! Just what I was looking for. The only thing I would have liked was if the illustrations were a bit nicer and the reason I didn't give this 5 stars. They seemed a bit rough around the edges, but it was enough to add some visual to the words.

Great addition to our advent reading!
