The classic, definitive, world-famous Nonesuch Press edition of 1937, finally available again and bound in leather and linen. The text in these stunning volumes is taken from the 1867 Chapman and Hall edition, which became known as the Charles Dickens edition and was the last edition to be corrected by the author himself. The Nonesuch edition contains full-color illustrations selected by Dickens himself, by artists including Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), George Cruikshank, John Leech, Robert Seymour, and George Cattermole.

The Nonesuch Dickens reproduces the original elegance of these beautiful editions. Books are printed on natural cream-shade high quality stock, quarter bound in bonded leather with cloth sides, include a ribbon marker, and feature special printed endpapers. Each volume is wrapped in a protective, clear acetate jacket.

The books are available as individual volumes, or as sets. The six-volume set contains Oliver Twist, Bleak House, Christmas Books, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations together with Hard Times. The three-volume set contains A Tale of Two Cities, Little Dorrit, and The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit.

Very moving stories and a great publishing house

Dickens' Christmas Books might be some of his most overlooked works, except for, of course, "A Christmas Carol." But in these stories he has captured the season's spirits of reflection and faith better than any other work I've read. "A Christmas Carol" is an acknowledged masterpiece; "The Chimes" and "The Battle of Life" are particularly moving as well. Four of these five stories bring me to tears by their ends.
I started in 1991 to read one story per year in the published sequence, (for Christmas 2000, I'm reading The Haunted Man again) and this has made December and its holidays more enjoyable and meaningful for me. I hope to continue the cycle and look forward to reading "this year's Christmas story" aloud to my family as my kids grow up.
Oxford Press/World's Classics publishes excellent quality paperbacks, and they do justice here to Dickens' powerful works. I highly recommend this work (and especially this publisher) to anyone; if you're looking for "A Christmas Carol", get this volume of all the Christmas Stories and enjoy even more of Dickens' masterful ability to weave the human condition into such moving short stories.

Review of the Nonesuch Dickens edition

My review here is not of the novel, but rather of the Nonesuch edition of Dickens' classic. The book itself is a facsimile edition of the 1937 Nonesuch Dickens, and is published by Barnes and Noble. The book itself is in quality hardback. "The Christmas Books" Nonesuch edition has the spine bound in leather and the rest of the cover is cloth-bound [the color is red].The dust jacket is clear quality plastic. The paper quality is of good stock and is cream in color.

The text is set in Martin's Type and the etchings were printed and hand-colored by A. Alexander and Sons Ltd. This is a beautiful and affordable classic [I own six of them and plan to get the rest] and the Nonesuch Dickens Classics will enhance any collector's library.

Full of joy and goodness

The first thing to point out with this collection is that it is well worth getting just for the first tale (the Christmas Carol). Christmas Carol, by far and away, more than matches the hype and is (dare I say it) genius! No other story (that I know of) imbues the spirit of christmas more perfectly and faithfully and this book is worth purchasing just for that.

However, tales two and three ('Chimes' and 'Cricket on the Hearth') are not quite so good and do let the collection down. 'Chimes' is a good story in essence: it is about a charactor called Trotty who becomes cynical about human nature and is taught a redemptive lesson by the spirits that live in the bells of the local church.
The really erksome thing is that the story never really seems to go anywhere and goes around the houses trying to do so. What should be a clear-cut and heartwarming tale, ends up not really imparting the lesson that it should; that man is built for better things.

'Cricket on the Hearth' is a little better and clearer in what it is aiming for and in its writing although I did read through ten pages of it where not a lot happened. Essentially it is about a carrier (Peerybingle) and his wife Dot who are watched over by a Guardian Angel in the form of a cricket. In a similar way to Christmas carol, this tale covers a redemption plot of the local toymaker (Tackleton) but also includes several other elements that make it an enjoyable Christmas tale.

So, to conclude, the first story in this book should be read by everyone, the second can be skipped and the third is worth reading, if only at Christmas time. As a collection, this book excludes the rather poorer tales of 'Battle of Life' and 'Haunted man', which is a redeeming virtue - if it excluded 'Chimes' as well, then it would be a true masterpiece.

Gets everything right

These writers really know Texas - I live in Houston, but I travel all over the state (I use these books to get day trip ideas) and they really nail pretty much every aspect of the Lone Star State: the best places for barbecue, the essential sights, the culture... like most Lonely Planet guides, the coverage of off-the-beaten-path destinations and outdoor activities is top-notch, which I love (although Frommer's has a more nuanced rating system and Fodor's has the prettiest layouts... but that's a discussion for another day).

In short, this is overall the best Texas guide I've read. My only hang-up is the writing in certain chapters (the Gulf Coast, in particular) is pretty dry, although the rest of the chapters are quite engaging. The quality of information throughout, however, is impeccable.

(P.S. - To the reviewer mentioning the "gross" food recommendations in Lockhart - I strongly disagree with you, as does apparently Texas Monthly and the long lines of people waiting out the door.)

I wished there were more substantial separate guides for each of the major Texas cities

Honestly, each of the sections in this book should probably have it's own book, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, etc. I just spent 9 days in Houston and got this book, in addition to several other relevant tour guides. In the end, I stopped using the other guides and consulted just with LP. In general, LP writers have a better feel for what is important, what is fun, and what is interesting. Houston is the fourth most populated city in the USA and growing. There's lots to do and while the 40 or so pages devoted to Houston were good, the best among the sources I had, I wished there was more. A problem in writing a Hoston tour guide is that it is growing and changing so quickly. Galveston is also interesting and the section on Galveston (just an hour away from Houston), should have been much, much bigger, too.
addendum (3/12/16): Just came back from 9 days in San Antonio and the Hill Country. I found these sections of this book just as good, and after buying and trying to use the other guides, I found this one the best

I Could Not Be Happier With This Book

Wow! Just what I needed. With my eyes growing older, this Book hits the mark. I've read other Bible versions other than NIV, but I've found myself preferring the NIV. All I needed was a quality Book with "Giant" print. This NIV is spot on, double columns, giant print, Words of Christ in red, a good quality "feel" and I can use a Sharpie Gel highlighter without it "bleeding" through. I made one heavy handed highlight on one sentence to test and it did not show through on the other side of the page. So the pages have adequate thickness for me.

So, if you prefer the NIV and your eyes are aging like mine, you should be very happy with the purchase of this Book. I could not be happier with this purchase myself.

Poor quality. PRINT size is great but the pages are not even and a few stick out at the end. Could not contact seller could only return. This was a gift for an elderly person and this did not make a nice gift due to the poor binding quality.

Very Happy Customer!

I was a little hesitant about getting this after reading some of the negative reviews, but I very glad I took a chance, and bought it anyway. It came today, and I'm very happy with the bible. The print is huge, just what I was looking for. It is very well put together, and I found no problems with the binding or the paper. I'm also happy with the cover material. This is not a bible you will want to bring with you to church. It's very large and quite heavy. Excellent for reading and study at home.

An awakening to reality

This book was given to me and I liked it so much a friend and I purchased several when they were in paper back and less expensive to give to teen girls for graduations and etc. The grasp of how the world is always trying to tempt the believer and convince us that we are waiting in vain and the hurt we feel when we fall for the lies and live worldly was so on target, I as well as all who read it wepted at the end, I felt the pain that Christiana felt because I was her, I realized that we have to be ready for the day when the Lord will return and not play the harlot while we are waiting. I thought it was a timely and well written book considering the loose sexually consenting world we live in and it will hopefully prevent young people from having to go that way.It helps one to realize that we actually hurt ourselves and feel the agony when we are face to face with a holy God.

The Unconditional love of God takes my breath away

In all the books I have read in my short lifetime, this book is the only that I read in a matter of hours. Not because it was short or I wanted to get it over with, but because it was so incredibily beautiful and profound that to stop reading seemed like an impossible act.
Everyone tells you all the time how much God loves you and how far and wide his love stretches out, but after you read this masterpiece, his love will be looked at in a whole new light.
God is someone that the human mind can not figure out so trying to put a specific depth to his love is nearly unthinkable. But this awe inspiring book makes you open your eyes and more importantly your heart and see just how much the Lord really loves us. It is done with the purest of thoughts and words. If you dont fall in love with God after reading this book, I dont know what else will make you.

A classic field handbook for manufacturing professionals

This textbook, which has been around for a number of years and has undergone a few revisions, has become the standard preparatory text for APICS tests and college-level production/operations management courses in dozens of universities.
The content is very broad - it covers almost the entire gamut of P/OM topics to some degree. That may be the only drawback to this book: it so broad in its topical coverage that there may be examples where the authors could have gone deeper in their presentation on specific subjects.
But even so, this charactertistic of being "100 miles wide and a few miles deep" works very well for readers who need a comprehensive primer on P/OM. That would include people just entering the field, or those that need to undestand the primary subject matters and areas of study, to point them in new directions.
I highly recommend this book as a foundation reference guide to your business library. Again, I know of many books that may be deeper in specific areas of P/OM, but I know of no book that encompasses so many topics and does and admirable job of presenting those topics. I would also caution the seasoned, highly-read P/OM professional in buying this book, but leave it for those newcomers to the field.

An excellent reference and resource - A "current classic"

This book is a classic: depth of information over a broad body of knowledge.
The error mentioned by another reviewer appears on p. 488: the "L-bar" term should be squared. Verifying dimensional homogeneity [i.e.that units of measure calculate consistently across the expression and result in "items" {whatever units demand is carried = units of safety stock}]) would alert a reader quickly that the product in the first term is incorrect.

Too wordy and lengthy content to focus the points well

Even if it is taken as the popular textbook for MPC, I'd rather read the another one: "Introduction to the materials management" by Arnold and Chapman. I can not easily catch the points and feel muddled after reading long sections and words in this book. However, the examples and case studies here are worthy to have a big picture for those who are new in this field.

Gianfranco Di Niso is a professional bartender who has won national and international competitions and runs professional training courses for both freestyle and cafeteria-style bartenders. Since 1986 he has worked in numerous establishments in and around Bergamo.
Davide Manzoni graduated from the Università Cattolica of Brescia with a degree in cinema studies. In addition to film, he is also passionate about cooking and writing.
Fabio Petroni has worked with some of the most famous names in international photography since 1984, as well as some of the top advertising agencies. He has been involved in campaigns for well-known national and international brands.

Great Resource

This is a great basic recipe book for generally all popular cocktails. I have found a few drinks which were not included but on the whole, a very nice foundation piece to add to or start a collection. I wish they would have included more explanation of some of the ingredients listed but overall a great buy. And, it is a beautiful book for showing off.

Still looking for "the one"

I have tried quite a few recipes from this book, and not really liked any of them. I have liked the same drinks from a bar (pina colada for example) so I think it's just a little different recipes. I think I'm just still looking for a recipe book that suits my tastes better. Even the drinks that were described as "girly" are not my cup of tea.

Excellent book overall

This is generally a very good cocktail recipe book. It has cocktails grouped according to the main alcoholic ingredient, e.g chapters by vodka-based drinks, gin-based drinks, etc. The large, full-color illustrations are very attractive.

Each page also has a food recipe on it. These tend to be very strange and nearly useless to the American reader. They have ingredients unfamiliar to Americans (e.g. "a sachet of vanilla sugar") or units of measurement that are unfathomable to the American reader, e.g. "a knob of yeast."
