Bulky but handleable

This is a botanical reference work on the trees of Southern Africa (mostly S-Africa & Rhodesia/Zimbabwe?). Its printing history speaks for itself. First published in 1977; second revised edition by Dr E.J.Moll in 1984, third impression 1988 (when 12 pages were added with updates on nomenclature); ninth impression in 1997. What can I add to that?
This is an identification key and reference work to Southern African trees, giving per species a short description, a distribution map and one (or more) line drawings of a detail, usually a leaf (sometimes a fruit, sometimes both. Upon occasion a tree habit). Names listed include full scientific name, in some cases synonyms, always an english name and usually an afrikaans name. There are close to a thousand pages of this, supplemented with over a hundred pages of color illustrations (both photographs and colored drawings).
Compared to some of the magnificently illustrated books on trees that are now available this work looks somewhat modest. However the absence of an abundance of photographs does mean that all these trees can be captured in a single binding of a handy size and weight, at a quite affordable price. [Might be due for an update, but I sure won't volunteer to undertake it. That would be a whole lot of work! ]

Definitive Field Guide

This book has been a classic for decades in the region. I first saw a copy in a park ranger's Land Rover years ago and found I couldn't put it down. It was indispensable so I went and got a copy--back when the region still had plenty of bookstores. I treasure it and have used in in East Africa also, where some of the trees' distribution range reaches. I highly recommend this book, whatever size it may become in future editions ("less is more" does NOT apply here!), at it truly is one of those rare books for amateurs and botanists alike.

Best tree book by far

This third edition of the classic book on trees in southern Africa is indeed heavy and bulky (c. 2,4 kilo), but anyone who wishes to identify any tree they might come across will have to take this tome into the field. It deals with about 2000 species. Not many areas of high species richness can boast a complete book to all the trees in one volume. It contains a vegetative key of 43 pages to the families, which works really well and can be considered the heart of the book. The reader should be familiar with botanical descriptive terminology, although the terms are also explained and many of them illustrated. There are some photographs in the middle of the book, but anyone who wants to identify trees with the help of photos should buy another book. This one is for botanists and keen amateurs who are willing to carry the weight and to use the extensive keys. The distribution maps often help to narrow down the results at a few glimpses. Otherwise the species are exactly described in a quarter to a third of a page. The author points out possible confusion with other species and adds ethnobotanical and general remarks. This surely is one of the best tree books worldwide!

Great Tips - Well Worth The Buy

Underscoring the importance of a college education as well as the fact that financing a college education is no joke, this book provides advice on how best to go about attaining scholarships for tertiary education. Another important point the writer makes is that students don't necessarily have to be straight A students, sports buffs or in the crème de la crème category to earn scholarships. Sure it helps to have a few great accolades tucked under your belt when applying for a scholarship, but I think too many people use that silly myth to deter them from gaining much needed assistance.

This book is great because:

1. It provides life skills that will help readers beyond the process of scholarship applications.
2. It covers the full process of applying (Fasfa, applications, essays, interviews, post-scholarship) and includes secrets that have been vetted by current admission officers.
3. It provides tips to win a lot of money regardless of your current financial situation.

I highly recommend it!

A RICHLY-PHOTOGRAPHED “JOURNALISTIC” ACCOUNT OF THE CRIMINAL TRIAL

The Introduction to this 1995 book states, “O.J. Simpson was the most famous American ever charged with murder: sports legend, movie actor, commercial pitchman, millionaire. With his dazzling smile and startling good looks he was an image of success for black Americans and a symbol of race transcendence for whites. It was safe for everyone to love O.J. His marriage to Nicole Brown, a blonde all-American beauty, was an interracial union that seemed made in heaven. Nothing bad could ever happen to this golden couple. And then the worst thing possible happened.” (Pg. 4)

The authors note, “The prosecution’s vast trial team… saw their future effectiveness damaged by the Simpson case. DNA experts admitted that the validity of their science had been so harshly attacked by a team of defense DNA experts that new cases would be tougher to win. Defense lawyers had been given a priceless course for free, courtesy of TV, on how to undermine DNA evidence.” (Pg. 9)

They point out, “it was clear that the O.J. Simpson case would evolve as a tale of two trials: the case in the courtroom before a jury and the contest in the public arena. Outside the courtroom, Simpson’s lawyers were playing to a different audience: the public that once embraced the football star and would hold the key to his future. With talk of a possible hung jury, the defense was keeping one eye on a potential second jury, a group that would likely be chosen from those exposed to the trial on TV. Thus, when particularly sensitive issues came up outside the jury’s presence, the arguments were more spirited than ever and often escalated into verbal warfare. The public was watching and the attorneys knew it.” (Pg. 11)

They suggest, “Even without testifying, Simpson was his own best witness… He was an experienced showman, and his demeanor during the famous glove demonstration showed how quickly he could seize an opportunity and run with it. He did it several times---when he was asked to show jurors the football injuries that scarred his legs and when he displayed his hands up close so they could see his arthritis-swollen knuckles. Jurors were wide-eyed.” (Pg. 15)

They observe, “the testimony of a limousine driver, Allan Park, added support for the [prosecutors’] timeline. Park rang and rang the door buzzer, receiving no answer until he saw a shadowy figure, probably a large black man, enter the house. Only then did the lights go on; only then did Simpson answer the intercom. And within six minutes he was on the doorstep with his bags, appearing every inch the celebrity dressed for the spotlight. How could he have accomplished this feat in six minutes? It was one of the many points of reasonable doubt that lingered in jurors’ minds.” (Pg. 17)

After Detective Mark Fuhrman took the Fifth, “Those who had dismissed the defense theory of a frameup now thought twice. Maybe it was possible. Maybe Fuhrman did plant the glove. Maybe the blood in the Bronco was his handiwork after all. And what of Detective Vannatter, who carried Simpson’s blood sample in his pocket for three hours, transporting it from the crime lab so Simpson’s estate?... Fuhrman and Vannatter… had inadvertently provided the defense with the most important element of its case: reasonable doubt.” (Pg. 18)

They state, “The verdict was not guilty on all counts… To some people, that just didn’t seem right; it seemed to them like a murderer buying an acquittal the way he bought his Ferrari, aided and abetted by a high-paid team of con men that duped a jury … To others, it was sweet justice, a long-overdue nationally televised example of the system finally doing for a black man reared in the projects what it’s done for decades for white men raised in the suburbs. The battle lines were drawn, whites on one side, blacks on the other.” (Pg. 121)

They suggest, “The Simpson verdicts … left America with a lot of cleanup to do. Pick an institution, any institution, and the Simpson case gave ample cause to examine and repair: the police, the jury system, the judiciary, the media. Look, also, at the moral issues: race relations truth, justice and dignity. All took their hits. One of the first targets of attack after the trial was… the courtroom pool camera… The Bar of California drafted a set of attorney conduct rules, partly as a result of the case, and began investigating some of the attorneys involved in the Simpson case… Nowhere was the post-riot rift between whites and blacks more profound than in perceptions of the police… Where everyone did agree, if for different reasons, was that police had better clean up their act.” (Pg. 122-123)

They also note, “[Simpson’s] world is shattered. The middle-aged white men he used to play golf with, and who gave him jobs selling rental cars and appearing in movies, are among those who most vehemently believe he’s a killer who got lucky. His staunchest supporters are urban African-Americans, the folks who made up the bulk of the jury, and it’s been a long time since Simpson has been to the community.” (Pg. 124)

This is hard an “in-depth” summary of the case---in fact, much of the book consists simply of reprints of the authors’ daily stories about the case---but it is rich with photographs, and balanced in its statements. For those wanting a photographic “overview” of the criminal case, this is an excellent volume.

Excellent resource for undergrad/seminary course in PoR

[For the sake of full disclosure, this reviewer is a former student and colleague of the author, who read and commented on earlier drafts of various chapters of this book. This review is written in part to clarify some issues raised by the review of Hande Z.]

Chad Meister is indeed a Christian, but this fact in no way disqualifies him from writing a fine introduction to the philosophy of religion textbook. Indeed, in a recent review, atheist philosopher Graham Oppy not only has described Meister's text as "a good introductory textbook for philosophy of religion" that "covers a decent range of topics" but also states that the book "manifests a self-conscious striving to give a non-partisan introduction to contemporary debates in the field."* Moreover, for better or worse, the majority of introduction to philosophy of religion texts have been written by Christians of various stripes: Yandell, Hick, Davis, Pojman, Peterson/Hasker/Reichenbach/Basinger; the notable exception being atheist William Rowe's excellent text.

Meister's text follows the general format and outline of these other introductory texts, with the bulk of the chapters on the traditional arguments for and against God's existence. For every argument for or against God's existence, Meister offers a number of counter-arguments from the literature. This can give the impression that Meister views there to be relative parity between the arguments, but in fact he is mostly reporting on the state of the field (and in this regard, this book is perhaps the most up-to-date of all introduction to philosophy of religion texts currently on offer). As one not fully convinced of the usefulness or success of theistic (or atheistic) arguments, this reviewer nonetheless finds Meister's discussion to be accessible, fair, evenhanded, and interesting. Meister's approach allows for students to evaluate the arguments on their own merits or for professors using this text to discuss the relative strengths of the arguments with their students. Some of the arguments in the book--pro or con--may be a bit simplified relative to those offered in scholarly journals or monographs, but this is to be expected in a text of this kind. However, to make up for this unavoidable deficiency, Meister includes a very helpful annotated bibliography at the end of each chapter, including a number of scholarly internet sources.

Perhaps what sets this text apart from others is its chapters on religious diversity and pluralism (chapter 2), conceptions of ultimate reality (chapter 3), and science, faith, and reason (chapter 8). While philosophy of religion traditionally has focused on arguments for and against God's existence, religious experience and religious epistemology, and metaphysical issues (divine foreknowledge and freedom, the afterlife, etc.), chapters 2, 3, and 8 especially evidence Meister's pulse on hot topics and emerging issues in the field as well as his desire to incorporate global perspectives as much as possible. Hopefully, as the field continues to incorporate minority and global perspectives, more and more space will be devoted in future editions to these perspectives and the issues they raise. In the meantime, Meister does a nice job of including these perspectives where appropriate without giving a false impression about the current, still largely western and a/theistic slant of the field of the philosophy of religion.

One might also have liked to see more on the emergence of analytic philosophical theology, with its analysis of traditional religious doctrines such as the trinity, incarnation, atonement, etc., but treating these issues adequately would have significantly added to the bulk (and thus price) of the text, not to mention further favoring western theistic discussions. (For those interested in these topics, see Meister and Taliaferro's co-edited Cambridge Companion to Christian Philosophical Theology [2009]).

Other helpful features of this book include a philosophy of religion timeline, discussion questions for each chapter, highlighted boxes that feature various major figures and movements, a glossary of terms, and various diagrams, not to mention its overall readable prose. Meister has also edited a 736 page Philosophy of Religion Reader (Routledge 2008), which serves as an excellent companion to this textbook for those who want to go deeper with primary sources.

An an introduction to the field, this book is highly recommended for upper level undergrad or introductory seminary courses in the philosophy of religion.
