Review
"Author Sherman calls PLAYING WITH SKETCHES "calisthenics for your hands and mind." With this book, she endeavors to expand readers' creativity through play, inviting them to step outside the known, disregard rigid rules they have internalized, and allow themselves to make mistakes. The exercises include back-to-basics and goal-oriented themes, and also more challenging concepts. Simple Lines, Collaborative Patterning, Five-Minute Drawings, Blind Drawing, and Sketch Share are just a few of the exercises offered. Challenge yourself to work through this book and you will really be exercising your creative muscles!" - Barbara Delaney, Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine

Great collection of fun drawing exercises and projects
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo1TGHMNUMOKRBH]]Playing with Sketches is a collection of fun drawing exercises and projects designed to keep your hands moving, and minds wandering. There are 50 activities in all, each one's a chapter by itself. I like this type of books because there are just so many things you can try out. The author is illustrator and educator Whitney Sherman.
The book starts with simple drawing exercises, such as drawing parallel lines, creating textures, playing with shapes, patterns, or even using smoke to draw, and others.
The latter part features more ideas and projects you can work on. Some of them would be like drawing things you see on the way home, having a different theme for your drawings each day, getting creative with using typography, collaborating with other artists, and many more.
Every activity comes with easy instructions and oftentimes some background on the techniques and history. They are accompanied by various examples of the same theme by other artists, and many artists featured so there's a good variety of styles to look at.
It's a book you can pick up, flip to any page, and get some ideas and inspiration for drawing. You can find new ways to use media, see things from a new perspective, and use the ideas and activities as springboard for further experimentation.
Recommended to to artists at all levels.
There are several publishers for this book, so the cover art might be different. Seems that in Asia, it's published by Page One Publishing, and elsewhere it's by Rockport Publishers.
If you're looking for similar books, I would also recommend Freehand: Sketching Tips and Tricks Drawn from Art by Helen Birch, Just Draw It! and Keys to Drawing with Imagination.

Playing With Sketches by Whitney Sherman
By Kass Hall
I am an art graduate and author but I am always looking for new books to encourage and progress my drawing. I really liked this book because it provided a range of easy to follow drawing exercises. You do not have to do them in order, and you can perhaps skip over those that aren't of interest. Practice in drawing is essential for anyone who wants to draw well - no matter your credentials, practice makes perfect and there are many exercises that can help here with that practice.
I especially like the tips in the first few pages from other artists and scattered throughout the book, as well as great website suggestions. Take your time to absorb and explore through this title - it is well worth the price.

Fun and Contemporary!
By Allen Scott
The layout and examples of illustrations in this book are fun, vibrant, colorful, and contemporary. It has a great modern style, and the variety of featured artists makes for an eclectic collection all in one book. There are great beginner tips and activities and simple drawing exercises to build off of. Overall this is like a fun activity book that will keep an artist of any level busy. There are helpful lists of materials that accompany the activities and the overall message is to keep playing, keep drawing, and keep practicing.
