Second chance at love Christmas story

A woman running away from the sympathetic looks and comments of her fellow towns people only to have an ex-boyfriend show up…they are stranded in her cabin in the mountains of Montana by a blizzard where their story comes full circle with a happy ending. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

Very enjoyable romantic sweet read.

I had been wondering when Lil would get her man after she had been a secondary character in the summer Secrets of Cherry Lake books. In The Christmas Secret by Jeannie Watt, Lil, the kindhearted but shoots-straight-from-the-hip school librarian gets a blast from the past.

The story is constructed that as it progresses much of Lil’s childhood and background is revealed. The same can be true of Casey Lanigan who is the older brother of Lil’s ex-fiance. I really like the way that that work as well as Casey and Lil working through so much past baggage. The kicker for me is when Casey admits to sticking to changing his life for himself. That made this story so much more realistic and probable.

I usually like a true villain in a story but this one work without that unless you count Grandmother Lanigan’s minor role. I couldn’t find it in me to hate Sophia or Curtis. Mostly it is everyday people with major flaws. Even Lil’s father is more pathetic than he is mean. Casey’s father for his part was in the running for the bad guy title but came through in the end. All of this worked for me, again this is how I have found real life to be even on the bad days. The fact that it all comes out at Christmas, helped to add a bit of sparkle in the mist of this soul-searching. I found this to be a page turning read, once I started it. It seems I enjoy reading of blizzards, natural weather and emotional ones.

When Lil Reynolds decides to get out of town and spend Christmas alone in her mountain cabin to avoid her ex-fiance’s getting married she didn’t expect to have a blizzard hit the mountains. Lil also didn’t expect her other ex-boyfriend Casey Lanigan to come knocking at the door when his truck gets stuck in the snow. Casey also happens to be the brother of the man Lil was going to marry one year before that she had come to the cabin to escape from.

One of my favorite types of romance reads are the rekindling of an old flame. While I completely enjoyed the story of being stuck in the cabin with an old flame that where there were still some feelings left after the years, the one thing I couldn’t help but wonder throughout was why in the world did Lil ever date both brothers to begin with? Had it not been Casey’s brother Lil was hiding from I probably would’ve rated this higher, still a good read though.

In this book Wilder Penfield, whose work has been at the forefront of such research, describes the current state of knowledge about the brain and asks to what extent recent findings explain the action of the mind. He offers the general reader a glimpse of exciting discoveries usually accessible to only a few scientists.

He writes: "Throughout my own scientific career I, like other scientists, have struggled to prove that the brain accounts for the mind. But perhaps the time has come when we may profitably consider the evidence as it stands, and ask the question...Can the mind be explained by what is now known about the brain?"

The central question, he points out, is whether man's being is determined by his body alone or by mind and body as separate elements. Before suggesting an answer, he gives a fascinating account of his experience as a neurosurgeon and scientist observing the brain in conscious patients.

Fascinating findings

I found Wilder Penfield's research with epileptic patients, fascinating. Reading his accounts of subjects responding to his "poking around" in their brains inspired me to read on. I was amazed that such poking could cause the recollection of detailed memories or the bodies of his subjects to react consistent with the area poked. It is remarkable that this brain surgeon was so puzzled by the fact that he could find no "record" in the brain of decision-making. His analogy of a "programmer" for the "computer/brain," gave even more data to the assumption of a "spirit" that resides in a person until death. I found it a reinforcement of what I already believe, but also surprising that a physician, who was not intending to propose such a hypothesis, came to such a conclusion. The book is very interesting reading for anyone who is interested in the workings of the brain or who is inquisitive about the existence of a "spirit" or a "mind" in human beings.

I found Penfield's writing about the "mind" and "spirit" to be fascinating. Scientists know what part of the brain is responsible for things like speech, sight, memory, sight, hearing, movement, etc. But what makes humans act and think the way we do? What is responsible for thought, reasoning, conscience, and those things that cant be measured? He describes the brain to be like a "computer that needs to be programmed". I found all his writing to be very interesting and informative. Some of the medical information was over my head as a lay person. But as a former patient of Montreal Neurological Hospital who had this very surgery while Awake for epilepsy, it brought back many memories of how they "poked" around in my brain and it created sensations in various areas of my body. For anyone interested in how the brain and mind work, this is an easy to read, interesting book. Like Dr. Feindel says in the introduction:" the brain is the most organized structure in the universe".

Thoughtful perspective

I enjoyed reading this book. It was not too complex or too detailed for the lay person. It was an honest and thoughtful perspective of a neurosurgeon who asks questions philosophically regarding the origin and energy source with regard to the mind. The brain is an organic structure that functions much like a computer. The mind is more like the programmer. His first hand experience of working with patients with epilepsy and the responses of these when electrical stimulation was applied to various regions of the brain help to support his premise.

Less Hype, More Info than Other Similar Titles

This book had less "being in jail is hardcore cool" than other prison fitness books and took more of a scientific look at *why* some people end up getting in shape when incarcerated.

The weighted routines looked better than the bodyweight stuff. If you truly want to get bigger and better using bodyweight only training, I think you are better off using Stew Smith's "PT Pyramid" and some squats at least a few times a week rather than a bodybuilding-style 'split' where you train different body parts different days.

That said, this is a very good book and well worth the money, and most of even the bodyweight info in there is spot on. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

This author has really done some research and it is a really good book! I can relate to him to a degree because I work in a juvenile prison and see what progress can be made with what the inmates have to work with! Since the Jeffrey Dallmer death in the Wisconsin prison system, free weights are not available in the juvenile system and probably in the adult also. I see the progress the juveniles make by just doing push-ups and sit-ups and deep knee squats. And they have for their diet high carbohydrate meals which really pack on pounds and muscle. They have weight machines but the youth rarely use it and choose instead to do push-ups and sit-ups. And they do it for the same reasons the adults do. It can be a deterant to being messed with by other inmates and brings a level of respect from the other inmates that they would not get otherwise. And most newby's are tested by someone! There is also a very good book I would recommend by Mark Hatmaker called, " Boxer's Book of Conditioning & Drills" which gives many different push-ups that will work the upper body to give it a bodybuilding look. It also will not affect your speed like some bodybuilding will. Get the book. You will get knowledge that will help you! He really brings it to a level that you can easily understand. A lot of your "Why's" will be answered!

SOLDIER APPROVED! Unique ideas, real world applications, no B.S. training modalities and enough Burpees to kill a Cross Fit enth

First off let me say I don’t care what most “fitness experts” say because most of them are just trying to SELL YOU on the latest and greatest. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have been a C.P.T. over 15 years and always keep an open mind when looking to include different tools for my tool bag. I have competed in a wide range of sports over the years and have adapted different training techniques to form well-rounded programs for not only my clients, but myself included. I have for the last 8 years served in the United States Army both in the Infantry and Military Police. I have always held a superior APFT and due to my past/part-time profession and experience, I normally get put in charge of conditioning my fellow soldiers. While deployed if you serve in a Combat MOS and basically live outside the wire staying in top condition can become tricky. This issue is common and has spawned inventive programs and even equipment to be made, for example the TRX. A soldier on deployment can relate and even experience the same kind of issues an inmate can. Meaning the use of exercise is to not only keep a soldier fit to fight, but to also help psychologically. Long stressful days can build upon themselves and one needs a healthy outlet for the monotonous times. I guess it can also be said if you look like you mean business, confrontations seem to be drastically reduced. In the book I found the workouts quite familiar, but the protocols as far as repetitions and rest times seem quite difficult. I have never done a “Tyson Squats” workout (For 5 mins.! Smoke City Baby) or Burpees for 10 mins. (BURTAL!!ARE YOU CRAZY!) Challenge accepted! To note these aren’t just one workout, but part of routines found on page 64 and 65. I found with the humor of the author mixed in with the actually meat and potatoes, the reading quite easy to digest and often found myself laughing. This kind of humor isn’t for everyone and neither are these workouts. NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED! I am going to recommend this book to a lot of my fellow soldiers, because these are the type of workouts we NEED. A soldier can’t be all show and no go, and with the fact that these workouts can be done ANYWHERE without any EQUPIMENT, makes these workouts and this book ideal for not only the harden locked up inmates, but my brothers in theater too. I will also include some of the training modalities with my clients of all ages and fitness levels. Personally I am about to try the 20- min.Admin. Segregation Workout (AS) found on page 66-67. I will mix this in with my lifting routines (WESTSIDE) and my Army conditioning (ie. rucking, running, and being a total badass), to be a Jail House Strong Soldier!

WAIT! This is not what it appears to be!

The advertising makes this appear to be a new printing of a wonderful old book that has gone out of print. That isn't what it is at all.

An outfit called General Books took an old copy of this out-of-print book, scanned it, used a computer program to covert it into text, and then printed it out (with new pagination, bearing no relation whatever to the original pagination) and bound it. The result is a complete mess. There are misspelled words everywhere (the software apparently isn't so good at recognizing letters in older fonts); the footnotes and chapter headings were absorbed into the text; the original page numbers are lost; the table of contents is completely useless because it gives page numbers corresponding to the original pagination. There are also many apparently meaningless long strings of characters.

For example, here is how the book begins:

What a mess!

This is probably the worst produced and printed book I've seen in many years. Typos, misprints, paragraphs separated.

Note that I'm not talking about the content, which remains to be read, but rather about the production itself. It is so bad that even glancing through it immediately highlights problems - no need to look hard.

Historically important work, but dismissible for its contents

Russell's famous work is of great importance historically because it set the tone for Leibniz study for a generation. Today this tone has been completely rejected by modern Leibniz scholars. Russell's work says more about Russell than Leibniz. Russell uses Leibniz as a punching bag to push his dogma. I recommend the many papers and journal entries written over the last 100 years which basically have proven almost every major attack Russell made on Leibniz to be unjustified. Still, this book is a must read for any serious Leibniz scholar for its historical importance alone and to understand why so many scholars after Russell had the narrow interpretation of Leibniz that they did.

The Offbeat Wonders of Maryland! }8#> (Goatman Smile)

This brought back many memories of my childhood when I grew up with some of the many urbans legends looked at in this entertaining volume! Inexplicably enduring figures as the Goat Man, the Bunny Man, and the Snallygaster are shown with such real life characters as Moll Dyer, persecuted as a witch and the notorious crime mistress Patty Cannon. One of the nice touches is the inclusion of current colorful characters in the state, such as horror show host Count Gore Devol and eccentric art entrepreneur Joe of Ocean Gallery in Ocean City. I won't go into any more detail because the sheer volume of surprises is worth many times the price! Initially, I was disappointed that precise locations of many of these wonders were not included but there are understandable reasons given for the omissions, but it can also be said that being easy to find would cheapen them. These wonderful secrets make me appreciate living in the Old Line State even more! There was so much more that could have been added that I could not give it a full five stars...but that is what future editions are for! I can't wait for the next one!
