About the Author

Qiuju Sun, PhD, is a professor in the College of Chemistry and Life Science at Shenyang Normal University and the director of Shenyang Key Laboratory of the advanced materials preparation and application at Shenyang Normal University. She earned her PhD at Northeastern University, China. She has been working at Shenyang Normal University since 1991. Her main research fields are liquid crystal polymers and polymer-matrix composites. She has more than 30 journal-published papers and patents.

Wu Li, PhD, is a research fellow and PhD supervisor of Qinghai Institute of Salt Lakes, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He earned his PhD from Lanzhou University. His research centers on inorganic whisker materials and comprehensive utilization of salt lake brines.

Rusen Meylani is a researcher, educator and academician who has taught at several distinguished K-12, undergraduates and graduate institutions in Europe. He has received many awards in mathmatics and physics. He holds a Master of Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree and is well published in his field. When he was a graduate student, he invented three methods that are currently being used with sophisticated printing devices, the last generation white goods, and, the state-of-the-art quality control systems. OK in Math 2 with TI-83 family; obsolete with TI-89 Titanium

You won't need techniques from this book on the SAT Subject Test in Math Level 1.
Most of the questions on this test are designed to be solved easily "by hand", and if you find one or two on which you could graph, then adjusting the window and manipulating "Calc zero" will take you 5 times longer than a straight forward solution.

Author's claim in his other book and on his site of squeezing
40(?) hours of precalculus into 4 hours using this book is preposterous.
It's obvious that if you want a decent score, you need not even bother trying to take Math Level 2 without knowing the precalc fundamentals. There are 3-5 questions on Math 2 where graphing might help, so skim through this book.
On the other hand, if you mastered TI-89, you will very likely do without graphing altogether, crunching equations in a sinch.

Now, on a different note. I am not the first one who noticed that 99% of Mr.Meylani books' raving reviewers did not write any others (check their "See all my other reviews" links). Enlisting one or a bunch of friends to register on Amazon.com with made up names and locations seems like not an improbable marketing ploy to me.

Very useful for SAT II and precalculus classes

I am a high school math teacher and I have been using this book in my precalculus classes. The author presents a unique method of combining math with TI as well as giving a variety of examples each of which is fully solved. This book is also useful for a self - teaching student as the book covers every detail sequentially from basics to advanced levels. The examples are neat and the solutions are detailed. Every student and teacher can use this book very confidently.

A must use this book for 2C.

My private tutor recommended me this book and the first thing we did when we started our 2C prep was covering the methods in this book and going over every problem. In the beginning I had no idea on trigonometry, logarithms, etc. In the end I could solve all questions on them. The author uses a specific approach that can be easily learnt. I took the 2C and I was overwhelmed to see that I solved most of the questions in the 2C test with my graphing calculator. 43 questions is enough to score 800 in 2C; I guess I did half of all questions with the TI. Moreover I was fast; I really did not have to remember all the nasty rules of logarithms to solve some of the questions. I do thank the author of this book as he/she has done a wonderful job.

Practical help for the BSG Simulation

Like the GLO-BUS Buster, this guide provides great lighthearted coaching for students participating in the BSG business simulation game. It is written by a former student/simulation player, and offers that perspective. It does give good, practical advice and helps to emphasize some of the more important aspects of the simulation (e.g. which competitive factors are most important). It also helps you avoid some simulation pitfalls (such as pricing yourself into a operational loss). The guide does a nice job tying concepts learned during MBA study to strategy formulation (e.g. finding the best way to finance expanding operations).

Having said that, do not expect this guide to guarantee you a win. This guide will definitely help you sharpen your simulation strategy and game-play, but how your team performs really does seem to depend on your competition, and what they do. At the very least, you shouldn't come in last. :-)

About the Author
Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC) was born at Arpinium to a wealthy local family. By 70 BC he had established himself as the leading barrister in Rome, and begun his political career. His ambition was such that he was able to receive honours usually only given to members of the Roman aristocracy. Michael Grant has successively been Chancellor's Medallist and Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, Professor of Humanity at Edinburgh University, first Vice-chancellor of Khartoum University, President and Vice-chancellor of the Queen's University, Belfast and President of the Classical Association.

A wise choice as a Cicero starter

Although "On the Good Life" is a hodgepodge of Cicero's essays, there are a few reasons why this book is a must buy. First, these are Cicero's words, some of the best writing to come from ancient Rome. Second, the essays are a great introduction to Cicero's immense collection of essays, speeches, and letters. His literary productive output was vast. Finally, Michael Grant's translation and introduction is of the highest quality.
A lot can be said about the selection of the essays - why would Michael Grant pick a Book Five (Discussions at Tusculum) and a Book Two (On Duties) instead of a complete collection of each? Where's the rest of these works? Frankly, it didn't matter to me. Once I began reading "On the Good Life" I was hooked. This book converted me into a lifelong Cicero fan and Grant's translations (through Penguin Classics) are my primary sources for his works. I have five Cicero books from Penguin Classics so far.
My favorite essay was "On Friendship." I would recommend it to anyone. It is wise, philosophical, and applicable to everyone even today. The rest of the essays were also fantastic with the exception - my opinion only - of "On the Orator." That I could have done without. It was a little too long and way too dry. I wish Michael Grant had squeezed in some other essay of Cicero's.
There are more comprehensive translations of Cicero but "On the Good Life" is a wise choice as a Cicero starter. If you enjoy classic literature and you haven't read Cicero, start here.

Old Tully Can be a Bit Overbearing

This is not one of those tomes I return to frequently, but when I do I am usually rewarded with a precept or an insight I overlooked the first time or which I have subsequently forgotten. Tully never let his mind drift off into the clouds. He is the arbiter of common sense and reason, above all, reason. He is a lawyer through and through. He will argue his case and expects no rebuttal. If in a given epistle, friend or foe should pose an objection to his line of reasoning, rather than engage in protracted debate, as Socrates might, Cicero delivers a few pithy rejoinders and the matter is settled:
"Cicero: ' Ah, you're trying to refute me by quoting things I've said or written myself. That's confronting me with documents that have already been sealed! You can reserve that method for people who only argue according to fixed rules. But I live from one day to the next! If something strikes me as probable, I say it; and that is how, unlike everyone else, I remain a free agent.'" Easy for him to say, and adroitly skating around any further discussion of the subject. Case closed! And if you come at me tomorrow, I may employ an entirely different line of reasoning. This is one reason Cicero used to be required reading for debate students.
Actually that is Tully at his least didactic, as his entire raison-d'etre was to teach. And his texts, coming down to us primarly in epistolatory form, do instruct us how to behave, how to interact, how to be civilized and live according to the Aristotelean Golden Mean. Luckily, they weren't sealed up as his law documents were. Virgil's ideal of "pietas" was derived in large part from Roman fathers of Cicero's ilk.
This book cannot be dismissed and should be required reading for anyone entering the law profession today. There might be more scrupulous attorneys practicing today if Ciceronian ethics were stressed as they were in olden days. This book is also full of common sense advice, the kind that used to be passed down from generation to generation, yet is sorely missing in these days of instant gratification and the glorification of self.

The works that comprise Michael Grant's rendition of Cicero's "On the Good Life" are: "The Tusculum Disputations (V)", "On Duties (II)," "On Friendship," On the Orator," and "The Dream of Scipio." These works expound upon the very essence of the highest good--namely the highest morality--and lay down a clear system of practical, applied ethics for the aspiring youth, statesman, orator, or sage. Cicero, furthermore, attempts to use these virtues to the direct benefit of the individual citizen and ultimately to the dignity of the Commonwealth. The sheer stateliness of these treatises will be enough to attract and excite scholars and, in a word, enlighten students seeking to grasp a general view of the works of one of the greatest philosophical popularizers in history, the immortal Marcus Tullius Cicero.
