This book just wasn't for me.

I'm sorry.. I really tried with this book. But unfortunately it just wasn't for me. I can read and devour books in one sitting. But this book took me days to get through! I kept putting it down to do other things.
It just didn't grab or hold my attention.
I liked Tate. But I hated how in the beginning he wanted Jonas to be all in. Pressuring him to make his decision. He seemed to go back in forth with that.
Then we have the whole Truvada thing. To just rely on that knowing you have people depending on you. To take such a big risk. Just because you think you're covered by a pill. I wasn't feeling that.
And Jonas.... I wasn't feeling him at all. Everything he said was a big WTH for me!
"He'd touched himself there a few times while j*rking off, but pen*trating himself, even with a finger, had felt like too much. Too gay."
Ughhhh...no.
Yes.... He changed as the book went on. But I just wasn't feeling him.
I wish I could have liked this book better.

Realistic and gritty and made me race through the pages.

Jonas is a closeted junior in college sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Delaware to keep him out of the spotlight after he's expelled from school in a frat-hazing-stunt-gone-wrong. Jonas has had a hard time living up to the perfect ideals of his strict, conservative parents, and suffers from a possible learning disability his folks won't accept.

Living with his aunt and uncle is a totally new world. Financially, they don't have much, but they share with real joy. They take care of their own, and more: they have tenants above their garage, Tate and his two younger sisters.

Tate is a 23 y/o out gay man who's not ashamed at his years of tricking to keep his family fed. Tate and his sisters were orphaned when he was just 16, and he fought hard to win their custody--not before they were both in bad spots in foster care. Tate strives to always put them first, especially his youngest sister Marnie who was assaulted and still suffers PTSD.

Tate is immediately attracted to Jonas, who's a right godly male specimen. Jonas is afraid of the feelings that Tate stirs, but can't help being awed by Tate's sheer awesomeness. Did I mention Tate runs (with his good friends) a homeless shelter for LGBT teens who've been kicked out by their parents? Yeah, Tate's the stand-up man Jonas would love to be. And that admiration allows Jonas to finally drop his facade. He's known he was gay for some time, but lives in fear of his parents cutting him off.

Of course, being in Delaware with his loving and open extended family--and Tate--allows Jonas to cut loose in a way he never could in college. And, Jonas pretty much loves it. Expect a lot of real hard times, though, because Daddy Dearest is one for the Internet Shame Awards.

I seriously fell into this book. It was such a heart-tugger, and really allowed these two young guys to explore a solid first relationship--one that was definitely heading into "forever" territory in the HEA ending. Jonas gets the help he needs to be a fully functional adult, one not beholden to his father's homophobic and controlling whims. Tate learns that he has to let go of his guilt surrounding the years he couldn't keep Addyson and Marnie protected, and build a new and brighter future for them, and himself, with Jonas.

There are some awesome secondary characters, and I'm sure we'll be lucky enough to experience their love stories going forward. I really ache for Marc and hope he finds a forever man.

The whole "gay teen homeless shelter" background was fantastic, and wonderfully rendered. It was clear exactly how razor-thin the operating budgets of these (unfortunately!!) necessary centers are, and I loved how Jonas did his very best to make Tate's place more financially solvent. I can only hope that a reconciliation for Jonas and his parents is on the horizon, and that a hefty donation from them will keep the doors open and the kids fed.

I haven't been accepting review requests or taking on review copies for tours and stuff unless they're written by authors that I know and love, simply because I already have a huge TBR pile of review books and ARCs that I need to get through. Seriously, it's bad. But when I saw the cover of this book come through my email from Kismet and read the synopsis, I knew I had to give it a try. I love LGBTQIA books but I don't read many. It's just my opinion, but quite often the ones that do come through are poorly written and the characters jump straight to bed, do the dirty, maybe one conflict and they're done. I'm not really a fan of that. When I read books with couples of the same sex (or any type of characters, really) I want the delicious bedrooms scenes to be heightened by the build up. I want to feel something other than just turned on.

I'm happy to say that Come What May did not disappoint. I admit that I did think the story, relation-ship wise, went a little fast. At times it felt like Jonas moved a little too quickly into the lifestyle he'd apparently always fought against. At the beginning of the story, we really got no hint that Jonas was gay and I assumed that he was unaware of it at well. The way he internalized with himself as well as the way he interacted with Tate. Very quickly however, he was admitting to Tate that he had always known, to some degree, that he was gay and that he had pretty much spent his life repressing it. I do feel like that was a little odd at times. He kind of went from end of the spectrum to the other in a super short amount of time.

I also love that this story dealt with some serious issues. I know quite a few people that either question their sexuality or identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc. and I HATE that a teenager, child, or even adult has to fear being thrown away by the people that should love them and support them the most because of who they are. I hate it so much. That is a kind of pain and suffering that someone is not able to understand fully unless they experience for themselves. Some of us end up never letting the people closest to us know who we fully are because we're afraid. And that sucks. No one should have to feel this way. I love that the Jonas and Tates story tackled that fully, from the shelter that Tate runs for homeless teens to the battle Jonas has to fight with his own father and mother. It was real and definitely important to the story.

Overall, I think this was a beautiful love story. The character were absolutely amazing and I fell in love with them. I'm curious as to what the author has in store for them in the rest of the All Saints series.

A Very Thorough Translation & Interpretation

I have read more than one translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and this, by far, is the best one. Swami Satyananda Saraswati presents a very clear, direct explanation of each sutra in English. There is both a Sanskrit and English version of the Sutras before the English explanation. Each sutra is treated individually with Swami Satyananda Saraswati's insights which illuminate the text so that the most knowledge can be gained from reading about very ancient yet important yoga precepts.

I read a lot of ratings which mark a text down for its "complexity", and I don't know if that is necessary here. I would say the text is thorough, which is what you want when a yogi translates and interprets the text. You want to get both a context and a further foundation for further study, and this book provides both. This is definitely 5 stars, and if you enjoy it, try looking at other works by the same author. He's one of the most intelligent authors I have come across on the subject of yoga.

a serious, brilliant, academic yet practical commentary of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and treatise on raja yoga, the world of mind

Anyone who is truly interested in yoga, and that includes meditation, has to read the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali. The sutras are widely regarded as the soul of yoga. The writing also goes by the name of Patanjali Yoga, or raja yoga (royal yoga or path), or the yoga of the mind. They were written in Sanskrit probably around 400 BC. The precise, frugal writing is methodical, logical, and scientific in its presentation. Like all ancient texts it leaves itself open to interpretation and thereby makes itself timeless. The knowledge is believed to have existed long before 400 BC. Since that time, many commentaries have been written. In this review, we focus on the commentary written by Swami Satyananda titled Four Chapters on Freedom: Patanjali's Yoga Sutras as this is a manual on liberation of the mind and liberation from the mind.

This commentary is based on lectures given by Swami Satyananda during the International Yoga Teachers' Training Course at the Bihar School of Yoga in 1967-68. It is a serious and illuminating commentary written by a highly regarded master and is used by many serious yoga teachers. The book is most suitable for advanced practitioners and patient readers. Each Sanskrit sutra is first given and then translated in detail. It is followed by a comprehensive commentary.

"The cow uttered the wisest words [M-o-o-o-o-o-o-o] in the satsang [of pundits discussing yoga]. Unknowingly, or perhaps knowingly, it told everyone, including the pandits, that the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali were not written for intellectual debate and speculation. They were written to explain the process and practical methods of raising levels of awareness, gaining deeper wisdom, exploring the potential of the mind and eventually going beyond the mind. The text is primarily practice oriented..."

These words from the introduction to the book say much about the author, his commentary, and the Yoga Sutras. The chapter clarifies the meaning of concentration and meditation right at the outset. These terms are used in so many ways in different countries, cultures, and texts even within the same tradition that a clarification of the meaning in a particular context is important to avoid misunderstanding.

The basis of the Yoga Sutras has much in common with Buddhism and Jainism as they all draw from an Indian system of philosophy called Samkhya. The scripture of the sutras is divided into four chapters. The first chapter starts with the definition of yoga and its purpose. It also gives advice on the means of attaining the experience of pure consciousness, obstacles to progress, methods of harmonizing the mind, and the importance of aum. The second chapter explains practices, basic tensions in life, how to remove them, the purpose for destruction of tensions, awareness versus lack of awareness, and intuitive knowledge. It also includes the well-known eight limbs (ashtanga) of yoga. The third chapter is on the powers of focus and concentration, meditation, superconsciousness, nature of external appearances, and transformation of external appearances. The fourth and final chapter discusses one-ness through the topics of cause of individuality, the individual and the cosmic mind, karma, unity of all things, perception, the unconscious mind, and the path to one-ness.

We conclude with the following passage from the introduction:

"Many of the verses indicate things that are beyond the range of normal mundane experience and comprehension. This is not done to bring an intellectual understanding. It is done so that a sadhaka (aspirant) who practices the yoga of Patanjali or any other system will progressively gain insight and understanding of the deeper aspects of being. He will gradually understand Patanjali's cryptic verses through his own experience. The verses tell him if he is going in the right direction or not and also help him proceed further. The verses can never be understood intellectually, nor are they intended to be understood in this manner. The verses were written as a map, a guide for the journey from the mundane levels to higher levels of consciousness and eventually to liberation. The text shows the path to perfect freedom through sustained yogic practice."

In this lucid and clear commentary of the sutras lies a deep understanding of yoga psychology considered by many to be very highly developed and older than Western psychology. This is why yoga meditation is found to be therapeutic by many practitioners. For a simpler, less in-depth and less academic commentary on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, try reading Raja Yoga by Swami Vivekananda.

Best commentary on Patanjali Yoga Sutra

For beginners, this book is not about asana (postures)and there are very few verses about asana. If one looks for asana, then they should read the book Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha.

This book is for more serious people who are seeking to practice Raja Yoga and desiring enlightenment and self realization. This book talks about how to get into samadhi (Chapter 1: Samadhi Pada) Samadhi meaning higher level of concentrated meditation or dhyana; how to perform sadhana (chapter 2: sadhana pada)Sadhana is a way of discipline in pursuit of a goal; Chapter 3 is Vibhooti pada, which is advanced and discusses about Samyama (Samyama is achieved with the combination of samadhi, dharana (concentration) and sadhana) and final chapter is Kaivalya Pada. Kaivalya Pada is about siddhi (siddhi meaning performing accomplishment and attainment of moksha). Siddhi can also mean miracles and attainment of eternality on one's own.

This book is a commentary not a translation work as written by some reviewers. Yoga Sutra was written by Patanjali more than 25 centuries ago. There were many great people such as Swami Vivekananda, Swami Satchithananda, other than Swami Satyananda Saraswati, had authored books on Yoga Sutras by Patanjali in recent century. How is this book different from other books? Author had implemented Patanjali Yoga Sutras in his life and in his disciples' lives and students lives and had seen the benefits out of them. His real life experience speaks through his commentary work.

By reading this book, will one be able to practice advanced topics such as samadhi and samyama and siddhi on their own? My answer is NO. This book work provides an excellent theoretical knowledge and one has to seek a Master Guru, who follows Patanjali Yoga Sutra way of life, can guide and hand hold him/ her.

In the western world, yoga is used more of a physical exercise and I have not come across any Western Guru who was able to guide me in Samyama, dharana and dhyana. I also found that there are not many Yoga Gurus, who can teach and guide in advanced topics such as samadhi and samyama. I know very few Gurus teach Samyama, one is Bihar School of Yoga's Trainer Swamijis and another is Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.

The famous diary is barely mentioned until well into the text; Poole has chosen instead to focus on Anne herself, and the fact that she was an ordinary girl born into extraordinarily difficult times. Although her elfish personality and sensitive soul are certainly alluded to, particular care is given to creating a context for the circumstances of her confinement and tragic demise. Both the text and illustrations quickly create a sense of foreboding. Spreads are dominated by Barrett's realistically rendered paintings done in subdued tones: Hitler's face looming large over small children in the street; broken glass flying through a storefront owned by a Jewish merchant; Anne and her friends denied entrance to the cinema; the girl's tearful good-bye to her beloved cat as she and her family prepare to go into hiding. At this point in the story, the details of her life as revealed in her diary are clearly explained but not sentimentalized or dwelt upon. The author details the difficulties of confinement, Anne's blossoming love for Peter, and the ultimate betrayal and capture of those hidden in the secret annex. Anne's death from typhus receives one sentence, balanced against the survival of her father and especially her diary, which was placed in his care and ultimately given to the world. Barrett's powerful, realistic pictures keep to Anne's viewpoint, showing the terror in the street and the anguish of leaving as well as Anne sitting alone in the attic writing or with her arms around fellow fugitive Peter. Finally comes the nightmare climax of the Nazi raid, "smash, crash, boots on the stairs." The text is substantial, but there's no attempt to tell it all, and the spaces left between the haunting words and beautiful pictures will send many to Anne's own journal. Let us not forget those times

The retelling is stark, compassionate, unsentimental. The art is reminiscent of ROSE BLANCHE, in grays and browns. This would be a good readaloud intro in any classroom before launching into reading the diary, no matter the students' age. An end page lists the chronology of events, has contact info for Ann Frank House in Amsterdam. This is really for all ages.

Compelling narrative and illustrations

There are two editorial reviews here that summarize the book quite well. I would like to concurr with another Amazon reviewer that states this would be a good book to read to students prior to any discussion in detail of " The Diary of Anne Frank." The art work is like the story itself; a stark portrait of one of the darkest time periods in man's history. It is a somber subject and should be treated as such I suppose; there is only one smiling group family portrait in the book. I would read this book to fifth graders and above only because of the subject matter and the questions and answers that will arise might be difficult for some youngsters to understand. This is a good picture-book biography for a parent or teacher to use if they feel the audience is mature enough to handle hard questions and answers. This book would make a worthy addition to the school library or community synagogue so that young people may better understand the injustices of the past and how they relate to contemporary times.

This was a wonderfully done picture book describing the life of Anne Frank, a young girl who sadly didn't live to see how much her writing continues to affect the world. The illustrations were flawless, capturing each member of the Frank family perfectly. A perfect addition to any school library, especially for those not interested in reading the actual diary or for those who want to revisit a young friend.
