Inconsistent

A post apocalypitc story of a young man struggling against the role he is being forced to play in society by a controlling government. The premise was good and the author does a god job of not revealing too much, letting you discover the plot as you go along. Unfortunately it feels liek there is no plot.
The characters are drawn into a video game that is supposed to show them how the world became the way it is but it seems disjointed and random as the story unfolds. I found the characters to bee iconsistent with their supposed genetic and environmental programming and the society filled with contradications. I struggled to figure out what the author was trying to accomplish but I think it was to surprise the reader with the origins of the current world society. However the telling left me uninterested in what happens next and the story felt full of holes. This one has potential but fell short of the mark.

Very bad choice for a course

This text is for a course where the students might not have any experience or particular interest in programming. The first chapter is actually devoted to explaining what a computer is and what a CS major studies.

As it is now in its 7th edition, I guess it is in fairly wide use. I can only assume that this is because most instructors have never read through it themselves, because it is truly awful. Yes, the table of contents looks promising and the pages are pretty, but concepts are introduced slowly in very pedantic language that can be hard to parse. Simple concepts are sometimes explained in a way that is remarkably unintutive. Details of specific language features tend to be scattered, so it is hard to form a coherent idea of each. Horrible book for begginers !!!

I got this book because it was the book choice of the classroom, unfortunately the class was online anddepeding on the book alone was a whole agony,this book was very very hard to understand especially for someone like me that had to previous programming experience. The bookgets harder when you go deeper into chapters I barely got a 5 out of 10 in chapters 6,7 and 8. By fortunewe only did 8 chapters because the class was online and perhaps the teacher knew the book was hard for usto understand. The. Book not only lacks good explanations but lacks information, you cant tell where the author got the answer from their no explanation on what exacklty is a placeholder, what it is used for and so on. Very hard to understand ... I hated every single moment of it and I am glad I finished it!!!

About the Author

Tom McKnight was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He started out to be a geologist, but discovered geography through the tutelage of Edwin J. Foscue, and soon shifted his interest to the "mother science." His training includes a B.A. degree (geology major, geography minor) from Southern Methodist University, an M.A. degree (geography major, geology minor) from the .University of Colorado, and a Ph.D. degree (geography major, meteorology minor) from the University of Wisconsin. He has been lucky enough to live in Australia for extended periods on twenty different occasions. Most of his professional life has been based at U.C.L.A., but he has also taught temporarily at nine American, three Canadian, and three Australian universities. He served as Chair of the U.C.L.A. Geography Department from 1978 to 1983. His favorite places are Australia, Colorado, Yellowstone Park, and Dallas.

Regional Geography of the United States and Canada (3rd Edition) is a well written text, aimed at the undergraduate level (primarily upper division). The material is presented in a readable format, using maps, illustrations and pictures when necessary to convey a point. This book focuses on landscape appreciation of the regional geography of the United States and Canada. He emphasizes the description and interpretation of North American landscapes, including their development. It covers such topics as: the North American continent; the physical environment; population; cities; regions; the Atlantic Northeast; French Canada; megalopolis; the Appalachians and Ozarks; the inland South; the Southeastern coast; the Heartland; the Great Plains and prairies; the Rocky Mountains; the Intermontane West; the California region; the Hawaiian Islands; the North Pacific coast; the Boreal Forest; and the Arctic. Of the five different college textbooks on the market that focus on the geography of the United States and Canada, this is by far one of the better texts.
