The Egyptian Museum houses the world's greatest collection of Egyptian treasures and antiquities, tens of thousands of stunning and fascinating objects dating from the earliest Predynastic times right through to the Greek and Roman Periods. Visitors to this great storehouse may become easily overwhelmed by the vast number of objects on display. But here for the first time is the world's best-known Egyptologist's personal introduction to the unmissable highlights of the Museum-Zahi Hawass's own selection of his favorite 200 exhibits. For each piece, he gives some background to its discovery and significance, and describes what it means for him in terms of the art or the history of ancient Egypt, and why it strikes a personal chord.
"Due to my love of the Egyptian Museum, I thought that it would be wonderful to write a guide to its treasures, and to talk about my favorite objects within."-Zahi Hawass

A 'Must Have'.....
By Shadowsmom42
Every single positive word that a person can think of falls into this book. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in the past, present AND future of Egyptian history. (When I say 'future', you will read in the introduction, by Zahi Hawass, what plans are in place for the Grand Museum of Egypt that is currently under construction.)
The photographer, Sandro Vannini, took some of the most beautiful photos I have ever seen of Egyptian antiquities.
This book covers everything you can think of: Predynastic and Early Dynastic period, The Old Kingdom, the Monuments of the Middle Kingdom, the Monuments of the New Kingdom, Amarna rooms, Monuments of the Later Periods, History of the Royal Mummies, History of the Royal Tombs of Tanis, History of the Tutankhamun Collection, Jewellery of Ancient Egypt......and more.
If you're anything like me and love the history of Ancient Egypt but can't afford to travel to Egypt to visit all the different museums, this is a book you can not pass up. This book is a Collector's Edition that anyone would be proud to display!

Light Reading!
By Pierre Gauthier
This review is from: Inside the Egyptian Museum Visitors Guid (Paperback)
This book essentially presents photographs of various artefacts in Cairo's Archeological Museum, each with a caption consisting of a short paragraph. This actually succeeds in making the reader appreciate each piece better than in the Museum itself. Anyone who has visited this crowded, messy and dusty place realizes however that such is not a major achievement.
The photographs are all in full colour, set on a black background and quite beautiful. There is, however, a definite lack of coordination with the captions. Often enough, the photo will only show a close-up of a piece but the text will describe the whole. It is awkward for instance to read about a statue's feet when only the head is shown!
The lay-out is strangely traditional, with each page being devoted either to text or photos. Though numerical references are provided, this is quite confusing as a caption may refer to a photo as much as 4 pages back or ahead.
Those who have visited the Cairo Museum may find this book worthwhile as a souvenir. However, those unfamiliar with Egyptian history and art should look elsewhere for a substantial introduction to the field.

Great Close ups
By S. Steer-Smith
An interesting guidebook to the Cairo Egyptian Museum. Zahi Hawass makes his choice of his favourite pieces from the museum. He starts with the replica of the Rosetta Stone and that the British Museum will not return it due to the security arrangements at Cairo Museum. Enough said. I could never understand why they have such a poor copy. The replica copy on the ground floor, which you are encouraged to touch, at the British Museum is much better. The photographs are excellent and Zahi's comments show his love of Ancient Egypt. For a more indepth guide "A walk through the Alleys of Ancient Egypt" by Abeer el-Shahawy is to be recommended
