We reviewed the first volume of this two-volume set in September 2005 HortIdeas--in fact, we were so impressed by it that we devoted that month's Book Reviews section entirely to it. Until Mycelium Running--another amazingly important and well-done book--appeared, we were considering doing the same this month for the second volume of Edible Forest Gardens, which is much thicker (by more than 270 pages!) than the first volume. The shorter length of this review certainly does not reflect the relative importance of the volumes--we recommend that anyone interested in experimenting with temperate-zone "gardening in the image of the forest" should study both.

Although Volume 2 ostensibly emphasizes "practical" information building on the "theoretical" ideas in Volume 1, it is clear that both volumes are essentially theoretical. That's because (as we discussed in our review of Volume 1) nobody has yet convincingly shown the viability of forest gardening (relying heavily on perennial crops) in temperate areas as a sustainable alternative to conventional gardening (based mainly on annual crops). Jacke and Toensmeier are, admirably, attempting to disseminate ideas gathered from a variety of source that might enable such viability. Ultimately, at this stage development of temperate-zone forest gardening techniques, virtually all approaches are experimental and in need of validation. We simply do not currently know their limitations.

Understanding that knowledge on "nest practices" for temperate-zone forest gardening needs to be established experimentally can be exciting for those willing and able to adopt the scientific attitude: no matter how they turn out, the results of an experiment, performed appropriately (meaning especially that adequate control treatments are provided), are never "bad." In other words, we think that would-be temperate-zone forest gardeners who are sincerely interested in helping to establish this novel form of agriculture should proceed by trying to test some of Jacke and Toensmeier's numerous design, site preparation, species choice and establishment, and management guidelines. We view Volume 2 of Edible Forest Gardens not as a recipe book for what works but rather as a compendium of possibilities for what could work--an invitation par excellence to experimentation instead of complacency. Right on!

But even if you grow enough organic food to feed yourself, are you doing what's best for the ecosystem? "Many drawbacks of modern agriculture persist in organic farming and gardening," Dave Jacke and Eric Toensmeier write in Edible Forest Gardens, because they do not "mimic the structure of natural systems, only selected functions." Even Quail Hill Farm members are still harvesting mostly annual crops grown in plowed fields. Jacke and Toensmeier offer a radical vision for stepping out of the conceptual continuum of conventional agriculture and organic farming. They point to the productivity of temperate forests--which is twice that of agricultural land in terms of net calories--and take that as their design model. Building on Robert Hart's classic book, Forest Gardening, and incorporating permaculture practice, Jacke and Toensmeier propose a garden where many species of edible perennial plants are grown together in a design that mimics forest structure and function.

Edible Forest Gardens is an ambitious two-volume work whose influence should extend well beyond ecologists and permaculturists and, in the best of all outcomes, reach into the mainstream. Volume one lays out the "Ecological Vision and Theory for Temperate Climate Permaculture," and it also includes a very useful analysis of existing forest gardens (one only 50 by 90 feet) and a tantalizing 30-page appendix of "top 100" species. As of this writing, volume two, which focuses on practical design and maintenance considerations, is just being released, but on the evidence of volume one, I have no doubt the set will be an indispensable reference for gardeners and farmers for decades.

"When people have food gardens," the authors write, "they usually are tucked out of sight and out of view of the neighbors. They rely on external inputs of energy, nutrients, insect and disease controls, and water and are based primarily on annual plants. For some reason, growing food is considered unsightly, unseemly, possibly antisocial, and in some towns and cities, illegal! The tremendous infrastructure we have built in our cities and towns reflects a culture and horticulture of separation and isolation." The consequences of such attitudes about growing food have been disastrous, and each of us can contribute to the repair effort. Jacke and Toensmeier say that the principles of forest gardening can be applied even in a tiny urban yard or on a rooftop. Containers of edible perennials and annuals on a rooftop are not most farmers' idea of agriculture, but I grow nearly 20 percent of the authors' top 100 species and intend to look for ways to take this small start much further.

And what about chocolate and oranges? Clearly there are foods that cannot be grown in a temperate forest. "We do not expect forest gardening to replace regular gardening or the foods we know and love," the authors admit. "Just how far we can take forest gardening in supplying food for ourselves is not yet determined." Finding the answer may be the most optimistic work gardeners and farmers can do.

About the Author

Dave Jacke has been a student of ecology and design since the 1970s, and has run his own ecological design firm—Dynamics Ecological Design Associates—since 1984. Dave is an engaging and passionate teacher of ecological design and permaculture, and a meticulous designer. He has consulted on, designed, built, and planted landscapes, homes, farms, and communities in the many parts of the United States, as well as overseas, but mainly in the Northeast. A cofounder of Land Trust at Gap Mountain in Jaffrey, NH, he homesteaded there for a number of years. He holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Simon's Rock College (1980) and a M.A. in Landscape Design from the Conway School of Landscape Design (1984). Eric Toensmeier is the award-winning author of Paradise Lot and Perennial Vegetables, and the co-author of Edible Forest Gardens. Eric is an appointed lecturer at Yale University, a Senior Fellow with Project Drawdown, and an international trainer. He presents in English and Spanish throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean. Eric has studied useful perennial plants and their roles in agroforestry systems for over two decades, and cultivates about 300 species in his urban garden. Excellent for anyone hoping to get a handle on sustainable agriculture

As a graduate of a Permaculture Design Course, organic farm worker and someone generally interested in virtually all aspect of sustainable ag, I found this book incredible. Now, I've only read the first one (about to start on volume number 2), but the quality of information in the first volume in outstanding. Volume 1 is concerned with the theory behind forest gardening, but with a keen eye towards using that information in the second volume (which includes detailed information on actually creating a forest garden). David Jacke does a great job of covering everything from invasive plants to forest succession to what a guild is and how to build one to underground microbes and why we should care about them. Full of informative figures, graphs and sidebars, this book does an excellent job of filling a niche that has been otherwise missed by many permaculture and sustainable ag books - what to do in the more temperate, rainy parts of the world. I'd recommend this book over Patrick Whitfield's great book if you live in the U.S. because it suggests a variety of plants native to the U.S. and has a larger number of useful species for people who live in the U.S. and are dealing with colder temperatures than those seen in Britain. Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone with the slightest interest in creating an edible landscape on a piece of property.

Great mix of theory and practical! Very thorough!

I bought the books to understand the practical aspects of building a forest garden on my 2 acre land. I started reading the vol 2 because that seemed to contain the practical advice. However, soon after, I became convinced that vol 1 can not be ignored. Now I have read vol 1 and am truly in awe of the authors' clarity of thinking and organizing the vast amounts of material and data. The theory is clear and up-to-date with vast recent scientific knowledge- a rare combination indeed.
My only advice to a beginning reader would be to read the last part (conclusion) of vol 1 before and in between the various chapters in order to maintain motivation and interest in the overly theoretical- but necessarily so- parts of vol 1. That chapter really ties the theory together with your reasons of going into such details as are presented.I found in that chapter my "aha" moment.
Thanks to the authors for these wonderful and helpful books. Are worth their weight in gold- or rich moist forest humus!

Permaculture Tour-de-force!

If you are a home gardener who has ever stopped to wonder whether permaculture was useful to you, you need to read these books. If you are an intermediate to advanced permaculturist, you will revel in these books. If you want to understand how a single individual with a garden can make the world a better place, you need to read these books.

Jacke and Toensmeier lay out an incredible vision in Volume I for the potential that permaculture holds for gardeners in the northern US. And they lead the reader through an eye-opening education in the scientific theory which supports that vision. In Volume II, they walk the reader through the process of creating their own unique vision for the reader's own permaculture design. Then they lay out, step by step, how to progress from vision to reality.

Along the way, they range from the theoretical to the highly practical, from how many miles of fungal strands are in a teaspoon of soil from the forest floor, to exactly how to plant a tree so that it not only survives but thrives. And they do it in a voice which is both learned and whimsical, enthusiastic and serious -- and downright fun.

I'm buying a second set of these books. I need to keep one set with me as I build my garden; I learn new things every time I turn the page, knowledge I need on a "how to" level. But I need a second set, so that I can lend it to my friends who would get tremendous insight from reading these books...my order for my second set is going in today!

Why did I write a book about what goes on behind the scenes at the Super Bowl? Because no one had ever done it before.

My editor Jason Kaufman, who was also the editor of The Da Vinci Code, called me up one day to talk about our next book project and he wondered if I’d be interested in writing a book about the Super Bowl, not only as a sporting event, but as a cultural phenomenon and an economic engine, and even as an unofficial national holiday. All Access Pass to the Super Bowl

What a great book for anyone wanting to know what it feels like to be behind the scenes at the Super Bowl! This book should be required reading for any college student in business or special events. Allen St. John as a unique talent for writing that makes you feel that he is just having a conversation with you and his chapter on the man in charge of the Super Bowl for the NFL is right on, makes me feel like I know this man personally. I highly recommend this book!

Sucks You In And Builds Anticipation

The subtitle on this book states that it will take you "behind the scenes of the greatest day in American sport...Super Bowl Sunday". Well, author Allen St. John delivered superbly on that promise.

Basically, this book takes you through the lion's share of the preparation that goes into pulling off perhaps the biggest logistical nightmare in sporting history...the NFL Super Bowl. From choosing a stadium (heck, BUILDING a stadium!), coordinating the crowd, throwing the parties, and broadcasting the on-field action, among many other areas, St. John takes you along for the ride as he begins to truly understand the magnitude of the events he is witnessing.

As a lifelong football fan, I have always watched the Super Bowl, but never really researched the kind of work that goes into making it all run smoothly (or at least as close to that definition as possible). St. John actually makes it fun, too, as his interviews with the key orchestrators of the event are always revealing without being pushy or overly dramatic...he's just a guy trying to wrap his head around everything.

There are really only two complaints I have about the book: First, is the prolonged focus on the building of the new stadium in Tempe, Arizona to host the Big Game. It almost seemed as if St. John's original goal was to show the kind of economic impact a new stadium could have on a particular reason, but then decided to broaden his scope. Also, I was left a little bit wanting by the ending; more specifically the fact that so little was actually written about the actual Super Bowl in question. St. John does a remarkable job of showing his readers the build-up to the event, but fizzles a bit when actually describing the events that made it all pay off.

All in all, though, this book is a fun little read for all NFL fans (or anyone in the marketing/advertising/production fields!) that will leave you wondering how it will all come together this February.

Enjoyable Look at "The Big Game" - a little too much playboy party though

I enjoyed this look at the Super Bowl. The author focuses on Super Bowl XLII in Phoenix. The book is not about football as much as it is about the cultural phenomenon that is the game. He looks at how stadiums are built and funded since hosting super bowls was how Phoenix justified the cost of the building. Television broadcasting is examined and the author describes in detail how the production is done and of course discusses the commercials. A good portion of the book, more than I cared for, was about the Playboy party. I would have been interested in a chapter about the party, but about 3 chapters are devoted to it.

"We have to have a little beauty in our lives, even in the midst of the struggle." *

In all honesty, I've avoided reading Zinn's "Emma" (and his "Marx in Soho") for years because my experience with literary pieces written by scholars is that they're usually didactic and lifeless. This was stupid on my part. After all, the eloquence of Zinn's You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train brought tears to my eyes on several occasions, and one of the things that makes his People's History a classic is the beauty of his style.

So reading "Emma," when I finally turned to it, was pure pleasure. The play is divided into 2 acts with 23 scenes between them. The first act tracks Emma's life up to Alexander Berkman's assassination attempt on Henry Clay Frick. The second focuses on Emma's life up to her arrest (and eventual deportation) during World War I, with special emphasis on her tumultuous love affair with Ben Reitman.

Zinn wants to pull off two things in "Emma": give the audience a good (although necessarily impressionistic) portrait of Emma Goldman the person, and also tell the audience something about her anarchist ideals and lifework. He does a good job of both, and especially manages to get across Emma's sheer love of life--"I realized my life could be...ecstatic," as she says at one point (p. 48)--that frequently set her apart from more dour, humorless fellow revolutionaries. (What might the Russian revolution have become if Lenin and Trotsky had loved life as fervently as Emma did?)

Zinn also succeeds, without being heavy-handed, in showing Emma's ongoing relevance (something he also pulls off with Marx in "Marx in Soho"). At one point in the second act, for example, Emma gives a speech on patriotism. "What is patriotism?" she asks her audience--that is, us. "Those who have had the fortune of being born on some particular spot consider themselves better, and nobler than the living beings inhabiting any other spot. It is, therefore, the duty of everyone living on that chosen spot to fight, kill, and die to impose his superiority upon all the others. Patriotism is the nourishment of war." A member of the audience shouts in protest that "patriotism makes us a united people!" "Yes," replies Emma, "it unites us, against others!"

"Emma" is guaranteed to whet one's appetite for more, and it sent me scurrying to reread old favorites--Kropotkin, Berkman, and Emma herself--who I haven't read in ages. I'd be ecstatic if I could actually see the play performed on stage. In this day and time especially, it merits a wide audience.

Accurate and Needed but...

Zinn does an excellent job of introducing readers to Goldman, Berkman, Most, Reitman and others. Readers get an accurate sense of their personalities and concerns, a consequence of Zinn's ability to adapt actual source material in the dialogue.
The problem with play is that its intention seems to almost entirely consist in introducing readers to Goldman et al. Although that is a worthy aim, the play itself lacks the dramatic tension necessary to lend cohesion to its snapshots of Goldman's life. The play seems loosely organized around Berkman's incarceration and Goldman's erotic relationships. Because these events happened over several years, the play attempts to cover too much time and, consequently, lacks the dramatic intensity of a shortened time frame.
Still, for anyone who loves and studies Goldman (as I do), this is a must read. It's clear that Zinn fully appreciates the greatness of this much-neglected radical.

Compelling Subject, Wrong Playwright...

So, this play gets four stars...but that's being generous. However, there are no other plays written about the amazing Red Emma, so Howard Zinn gets many, many kudos for writing a play about a person whom the American government and textbook writers would seem to want to forget about. Goldman was an amazing woman--anarchist and feminist, she was a proponent of free love (homo and heterosexual), an avid fighter for workers' rights and women's reproductive rights, and an impassioned speaker. In fact, in her heyday, her speeches would have drawn crowds the likes of Martin Luther King or Barack Obama.

So, thank you, Howard Zinn for resurrecting Emma into play form. But let's be clear: Howard Zinn is not a playwright (although a stunning historian), and this is not a very good play. It's quite didactic, relatively undramatic, and long. Basically, Howard Zinn took a history book and put it into play form, without changing the style.

So, a mixed bag altogether. It's an important play, because there's not really any other play about her, but let's just say, I hope someone writes a better one soon.

A good start

I have been studying the business travel market for the past year and have been surprised by how little concrete information there is on business travel as a market segment. Leisure travel can be segmented into many known categories - independent travelers, adventure travelers, voluntourists, etc. But so much less is known about sub-segments of business travel. I thought this book was very helpful at creating a theoretical framework for analyzing the business travel market and had some useful case studies for those who want to work in business travel, especially events planning and travel management. I liked the book and found it useful, although I wish that the authors had been able to provide deeper analysis of the diverse business travel market segments.

When someone asks me to name my favorite among all the books I've written,  I ask them what a parent of three or four or six children might say if asked to name their favorite, and they get the point: I love them all. No one is better, only different.

Certainly my first, or signature book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, is best known, and close to my heart. Yet each book provides its own unique facets. And yet . . . and yet . . . I do have a special feeling about The Four Purposes of Life.  Because it truly delivers on the promise of its subtitle -- "finding meaning and direction in a changing world." 

This book, which offers hope as well as encouraging reminders, is both timely and timeless, exploring and answering deep (yet often unasked) questions at the core of our lives:  What am I here to do? What do I really want?  Is getting what I want going to take me to where I want to be? And finally, What is the purpose of my life?

This book contains some important elements from earlier books, but for the first time places them in their proper context.  After reading it once, and even again, most readers will experience a quantum leap in wisdom and perspective that can last a lifetime.

This simple and profound little guide provides wise advice on how to create a more meaningful life

There is an old saying, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." In the case of Dan Millman's newest book, "The Four Purposes of Life: Finding Meaning and Direction in a Changing World" it is more like, when the student is ready, the lesson will appear. I say this because I have been a fan of Millman's books and teachings since the 1980s when I read "Way of the Peaceful Warrior." I've studied his teachings, and they have influenced my own.

I've also known that this book was coming out in 2011 for quite some time, and looked forward to adding it to my library. What I didn't know was this book was for anyone seeking deeper insight into themselves and their lives, but especially for those at a crossroads, facing a challenge or change, when "business as usual" no longer applies. Just this week I embarked upon a new journey where I will face unique challenges as I accepted a position as an Executive Director of a not for profit organization that fulfills two (satisfying work and providing a useful service) of the three needs Millman discusses in the chapter on finding your career and calling. One of my challenges is to lead the organization to a place where the third need (financial income or good money) will be realized.

"The Four Purposes of Life" is a small hardcover book that contains a simple, yet profound message. Simple in that is it easy to read, and that Millman has the ability to describe complex ideas in language that make the ideas easier to grasp and implement into one's life. Profound in the fact that contemplation on the ideas presented in this short guide can have an enormous impact on one's life.

The four areas, or purposes, covered include learning life's lessons, finding your career and calling, discovering your life path, and attending to this arising moment. Each of these chapters provides insight, guidance, and stimulus to think about your own path and where you will go from here. The third purpose, discovering your life path, is a short course on the Life Purpose System that Millman detailed in his book "The Life You Were Born to Live." This system is based on your birth number, and there is an appendix to assist you with determining yours, or you can go to Millman's website to find your number. The fourth purpose, attending to this arising moment, is something Millman has written about before as well, but this chapter really hit home as I was reading it this morning. It is good to be reminded that there are no ordinary moments, and I just may reread Millman's book of that title for some deeper contemplation on this topic.

Each of us has a different path to follow, and Millman has that rare ability to offer practical guidance and insights regardless of one's chosen path. This simple and profound little guide provides wise advice on how to create a more meaningful life. The wisdom in these pages will not only help you find the passion to improve your life, but provides the inspiration to do it now.

The Best Book Yet!!!

While Dan Millman has written four(4)inspirational novels, eight(8) guidebooks, an inspirational book and two(2) children's books this book is his best, most complete book to date. It takes the best from each of the 8 guidebooks and distills them to the essence of the message. This is a book that I will give to friends and student's much as I have given away "Way of the Peaceful Warrior". It is truly a book that enables you to "find meaning and direction in a changing world".

Dan's most concise teachings in one book

I've been a dedicated follower of Dan's teachings for the past ten+ years, and for good reasons: they exude excellence, clarity and compassion in a way rarely found in this world. So I naturally have high standards when it comes to Dan's work, and I'm pleased to say that this book exceeded even these expectations.

In this book in particular, I sense a spiritual maturity and clarity that can probably only come from a long life well lived; I can't quite put my finger on why I have this particular impression: it could be the style, the tightness of the prose (every word in The Four Purposes seems to have a purpose in itself) or simply the energy resonance I sense between the lines. Either way, it's a gem of a book. It also distills most of Dan's teachings into a concise format—all these years, all the different directions the author explored, have been brought together into a single framework, and that's what I love about this book as well.

I sense this book in particular can be a great introductory book for newcomers to Dan's work as well. Highly recommend it.
