Heroes of Tomorrow

As America recovered after WW II, in Britain it was a different story. Everything was bombed and destroyed, being rebuilt slowly, if at all. The economy was bankrupt, rationing was in full force, most returned soldiers were struggling to get by. Amid the wreckage came one bright spot: a boys' weekly paper called the Eagle, and its unsinkable hero, Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future. Dan Dare was written and drawn by Frank Hampson, and most people who see it now are still amazed. Titan Books UK has released color hardbacks of dozens of Dan Dare strips, for example: Classic Dan Dare: The Reign of the Robots (Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future), but this is something different.

Annuals are a British tradition unknown in America. They're generally hardback, come out once a year, and usually center around a comic like Beano or a TV show like Thunderbirds. This Eagle Annual is a 177 page hardback, designed to look like an Annual, even to the distressed look of the pages, but it's not from one year. Rather, it's a "best of" from the early 'fifties of the Eagle. It's not all Dan Dare either, although it does include many full-color slick pages from that strip. Colin Frewin and Orion books instead recreated the sense of the Eagle, including many features, other comic strips, even letters to the editor.

A popular feature of the paper was the "cutaway", which showed the inside workings of anything from a 1953 Vauxhall car to the H.M.S. Eagle aircraft carrier, to future conceptions of a "flying wing" (which became a reality with stealth aircraft) and "The Future City Airport". A separate book has been published compiling the cutaways, The Eagle Annual of the Cutaways. There was a light-hearted, optimistic sense in the Eagle, as when one diagram bore the title: "L. Ashwell Wood proves once again why he is King of the Cutaway".

Many of the other features suggest the American scouting magazine, Boys Life, not surprising since scouting started as orienteering in Britain. There were all sorts of contests, and young chaps might be honoured as "Mug of the Month" with their mug (picture) in the mag. There was advice on raising pets, building your own crystal radio set, repairing things around the home, and the Eagle Special Investigator (who looked like a nerd) was always off on some daring, dangerous adventure, like being target for a knife thrower, becoming a "living firework", or crossing the atlantic on the new Boeing Stratoliner.

So many girls read the Eagle, that the eds started a sister publication, "Girl", with daring exploits of female pilots and detectives, and many of the same features of the Eagle. Next came "Robin": "Good news for your younger brothers and sisters! A strip cartoon paper especially for them", and finally, "Swift", for the age level above "Robin". There were also Eagle clubs, joint Eagle-Girl Adventure Tours, and at the Boys and Girls Exhibition at Olympia, London, presented by Eagle's publisher, Hulton, there was a special Club Room for Eagle Club members only.

A great deal of merchandise was produced, from an Eagle hairbrush to a Dan Dare raincoat, but dazzling art by Hampson and other artists adorned hundreds of space-themed toys which are now eagerly sought by collectors. The engaging overview of space-age collectibles, Blast Off! Rockets, Robots, Ray Guns, and Rarities from the Golden Age of Space Toys published by Dark Horse, features an entire chapter on Dan Dare.

Looking back, one can see that even in the midst of war-ravaged Britain, artists and writers put their talents to work to create a paper so encouraging and creative that Eagle could boast advertising "serving every boy in Britain. One can only contrast this attitude with the nearly universal cynicism that prevails today in comics and movies. There is a sad coda. In 1959 the Eagle underwent what we today would call a hostile takeover. Hampson was first forced to curtail his lavish and expensive artwork on Dan Dare, and finally, like so many artists, lost control of his creation. However, there is word of a revival, as in 2007 a CGI (computer graphic imagery) TV series was created, "Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future". Will it prove true to Hampson's vision? One hopeful note is that the artists and animators working on the series fell in love with Hampson's artwork, as does nearly anyone who cracks the cover of the Eagle Annual.

I do not like writing reviews before I finish a book, but 1/3 the way into this book and I just cannot take anymore.

* Minor Spoilers *
Russ Green and Vivian meet and fall in love. By the end of the first page I was sure I knew where the book was going. I was sure she would die in childbirth and Russ would have to raise their daughter alone. I could not have been more wrong, but I almost wish Mr. Sparks would got back to his old cliché.

Instead the book comes off more like a Taylor Swift break-up song she writes for the sole purpose of revenge. At first Russ and Vivian are a happy newlywed couple. Very quickly their daughter London comes along and they settle into a typical middle class life with her staying home and him going off to his fancy PR job. But when he feels insecure at work he quits his job and starts his own company without getting a single client ready first. He then becomes bitter and feels insecure. Vivian gets a job with Walter Spannerman (read that as Donald Trump) and Russ is resentful. The next 7 chapters are from his point of view as he complains because he has to spend time with his daughter, taking her to her activities and doing household chores like grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and laundry. As if that is not enough he grumbles because he is not getting enough attention in the bedroom. When the couple does spend time together they bicker and snipe at each other constantly. While reading it I start feeling agitated and cranky too.

If all that is not enough the book is poorly edited. Words are missing and sentences repeat themselves. You can figure out what he was trying to say, but it feels like Mr Sparks is either just not interested in writing anymore, this book was rushed to release, or it was written as a way to get back at his wife after their divorce. I mean no disrespect to either of them, because it is horrible when any marriage ends, but this book is definitely in my top 5 worst books I have ever read

A True Disappointment

What a disappointment. From the first few pages I knew Sparks was writing this as therapy to his own divorce from his wife of so many years. He has lost it as far as I am concerned, and I doubt if I will ever buy another of his books. I always felt he wrote the best love stories of any author I had read, but this one made me feel he was unhappy when he wrote it. It just went on and on and on over the mess of his marriage, with him insisting that Russ was a hero, but rather it looked like he was a door-mat to his aggressive wife. Could have been a good story if the first half of the book had been perhaps 50 pages! Poorly written and edited. Such talent wasted.

sparks last book was worthless enough for me to pass on ever buying his books again, but I thought maybe it was n exception. WRONG! this book was even worse! It may be time to give it up Sparks; or at least get an editorial staff that has more than an 8th grade level of basic grammar. I cringed every time I read each tical error- I usually read through his works with seldom a drop of the boom but I had to take breaks just to literally finish it -- which I did merely in an attempt to see if the next page or chapter would eventually reveal ANY plot or subplot. Nothing but streaming whiny dribble . Last Sparks book for me and I gave up on his movies 2 productions back. Either his ex was the ghost author of his initial works or he's just list the gift and money won out. So sad.

Enjoyable sequel and conclusion to The Calhouns

I enjoy light romance mixed with some mystery/adventure and with well developed secondary characters. These last two stories of the 4 Calhoun sisters and their sister-in-law were very touching as both women, Suzanna and Megan, were single moms. Suzanna through divorce and Megan as a never married and left-in-the-lurch innocent. Suzanna particulary had a rough time trusting herself and her feelings after a very rough marriage and had so much concern for her sons that as a mom myself I could empathize. Megan was so young when she trusted innocently (here is another reason that abstinence before marriage is not a bad idea) and was so hurt and ignored by the father of her child.

The secondary characters of Dutch and Aunt Coco were lots of fun and you could feel how Dutch was nervous about the whole thing but couldn't fight it. And then you add in the mystery of the emeralds and Bianca and Christian's relationship and that was very touching as well.

I recommend it -- not as a heavy serious mystery but as a light, touchingly funny and sensitive set of stories.

The illustrious Calhoun sisters

Two books are combined in this edition; Suzanna * Megan; also titled Suzanna's Surrender and Megan's Mate. The Calhoun family has owned a `castle' on the cliffs of Maine for years.
Suzanna returns with her two children after a terrible marriage and divorce to start her own business and raise her children. There is the undercurrent of a previous story, which you do not necessarily have to have read in order to understand. An emerald necklace has been lost for years and it is being hunted by the family and a dangerous jewel thief.

This of course is a romance. So Suzanna meets the handsome former cop who is gruff, but falls in love with her children and has been in love with her since their childhood. This, in some points almost becomes the bodice rippers of old, with.... `you are mine' and torn blouses and "no, I need more time" but secretly she doesn't . That can become a little irksome to some modern readers.
Nora Roberts is one of the few female romance writers that can write male dialogue and make you forget a female is writing it. As always there are problems and a happy ending.
Megan's story is a bit tamer. She was seduced by Suzanna's husband... the cad! and has a son who are both welcomed into the family home. Megan being a wonderful accountant straightens out the books, solves a family mystery and of course meets the handsome gruff man who falls in love with her and her son. The sisters and brothers in law and all the family all get along, even when they argue. They all are beautiful and love each other.

It still is a fun and fascinating book to read....with one caution.
Check those copy write dates and make sure you know these were previously published in 1991 and 1996...just so you do not buy a book you have preciously read thinking it is a new story.

Very Good!

Yes this is old Nora, but it is a great story. This was a reread for me and I enjoyed it the second time around very much.

This is the last 2 stories in the 5 that involve the Calhoun family.

In Suzanna's surrender you finally get the oldest sisters story. She had a rough marriage and an even harder divorce. She is raising two kids and working hard at her own gardening business. She gets involved with ex-cop Holt Bradford, who was also the local bad boy in his teens. This is a great love story. Also in this story you have the conclusion to the mystery surrounding the Calhoun's Great Grandmother's tragic death and the missing emeralds. You also get more details of the love affair between Christian and Bianca, in Christians words.

In Megan's Mate you have the story of Calhoun sister in law. This story takes place a year after Suzanna's so you get a nice follow up on the whole family. Megan is a single mother who has closed herself off to love... But then she meets Nate Fury and all her walls come crashing down.

This is a wonderful conclusion to the Calhoun Family saga. Two great stories.

If your startup is looking for an angel investor, you need to know what the angels are looking for. Understanding what motivates and excites an angel investor is crucial to getting funded. This book gives you insights from the angel's point of view.

Brian Cohen's biggest claim to fame is being the first investor in Pinterest. He's also the chairman of New York Angels, a consortium of 75 accredited investors that have collectively invested over $45 million and the co-founder, along with his son Trace, of Launch.it, a platform for startups to manage and distribute news.

The title may say "every investor", but these are definitely Cohen's opinions. Still, the principles and advice he shares in the book are common to most angel investors. Cohen's take on angel investing is that it's a "contact sport". Founders and angels need to stay engaged. Even the significance of a meal shared by angels and founders is discussed.

Instead of general ideas, this book is filled with clear-cut advice on how to make the best impression with potential investors. Examples included in the book are:

This book is the blueprint for start-up entrepreneurs who are seeking funding from Angel Investors. The author (Brian Cohen) is an actual investor from the New York Angeles and he has invested millions of dollars in new start ups. Cohen let's you inside of his mind and tells you how he and other investors "think" about the investing process. He will tell you exactly what you need to do to get an angel investor to pull out his checkbook and write a check for your start up. Don't assume you already know what it is. There is a process and an art to getting your start up funded and Cohen gives you the keys to the kingdom.

Cohen holds your hand and takes you step by step through the process of getting your start up funded. He gives you "key phrases" of what to actually say to investors in critical situations. He tells you the best way to approach an angel investor and how he likes to be approached. He lists the key things that angel investors look for in their decision process. He tells you the mistakes that most start-up entrepreneurs makes, so you can avoid making the same mistakes. And if that is not enough, he gives you resources and tells you exactly where to find angel investors and how to contact them.

"There are 250,000 Angel Investors in the U.S. funding 50,000 start-ups in a year. Angel investors commit about $20 billion to start-ups." I was stunned when I read this statistic in Cohen's book. It's data from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Bottom line... there are plenty of angel investors out there and they are looking for businesses to invest in. Mine as well be yours right?

If you are an entrepreneur and starting a business or thinking about starting a business my recommendation is that you stop everything you are doing right now! Buy this book, read it, study it, take notes and apply everything you see. If you do that, then I believe your $16 investment will pay for itself a thousand times over.

What Every Angel Investor Wants You To Know

Lots of books have been published about venture capital, but not too many about angel investing. Now along comes "What Every Angel Investor Wants You To Know."
The book is full of practical advice for entrepreneurs raising finance for their startup. And it has plenty of case studies to make sure the lessons sink in.
Best in my opinion is that the book is written not by an academic but a person who lives and breathes this stuff every day. Brian S. Cohen is an active angel investor in the New York City startup community, and the chairman of New York Angels.
In his book, Cohen relates tons of examples from his investing experience on the startup trail, including a men's briefs designer he's backed (and endorsed). But more common are the stories of tech entrepreneurs he's backed and the reasons why. One key factor behind all his investments, including Pinterest, is the entrepreneur's deep knowledge of the market.
The book is loaded with personality -- humor, warmth, candor, upbeat -- and reads like it's written from the heart.
I highly recommend this book for any entrepreneur serious about getting ahead in the startup world.

About the Author
Brian D. Schultz is an assistant professor of education and honors faculty at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) in Chicago. He also taught in the Chicago Public Schools and in 2005 received the Educator of the Year Award from the Illinois Computing Educators. Brian is the recipient of 2008 Early Career Awards from the American Education Research Association in both Critical Issues in Curriculum & Cultural Studies, and Narrative & Research.

Everyone should read this book!!

Truly one of the most inspiring and thought-provoking reads I've encountered in a long time. This book speaks to the very heart of what teaching and learning should be. Schultz takes you deep into the heart of room 405 where he and his 5th grade students are transformed into community activists fighting for justice in the form of a new school. This is a powerful story of students motivated to lead, and a teacher courageous enough to follow that lead. The hope, will, and tenacity of these students demonstrate what's possible in education when kids are engaged in authentic purposes for learning. This book is a must-read for anyone who cares about children, education, or the role of schools in creating an active citizenry. Rarely has a book made me feel so inspired. The journey of these students and their teacher, as the title suggests, is truly spectacular.

Spectacular Things Happen!

In his book, Spectacular Things Happen Along the Way, author Brian D. Schultz, narrates the astonishing efforts of his class of fifth grade students who fight for basic resources in their school, William D. Carr Community Academy, in Cabrini Green neighborhood, located on the near North-side of the city of Chicago. Schultz' narrative account of this urban school is a teacher's voice echoed in the actions of his students who struggle to revive the empty promise made to them of a new school building by city officials. The students along with the teacher tap into the real life issues of politics and race. They voice their concerns and stand up for what they believe. Spectacular Things Happen Along the Way is a journey of these children along with their mentor from their classroom walls into the practical world of reality. Together, they move every nook and cranny of political reform that is in their reach to work towards their goal and discover that amazing things have happened along the way of constant pursuit. This book is a celebration of all those spectacular things. From the countless stories that can be told from this experience, Schultz had authentically captured in a beautiful narration an example of democratic education in a real-life account.

This book takes the readers on an emotional roller coaster of astonishment, a virtual struggle, and unbelievable exhilaration. This real-life story is the voice of an inner struggle of a teacher with his teaching philosophy juxtaposed with the outer struggle of the students trying to understand their situation, concluded with a celebration of the efforts and lessons learned. Teacher Brian Schultz builds the background of the importance of democratic teaching, and focuses on his theory of education in the light of the restraints put on educators in the wake of No Child Left Behind of 2001. He struggles with the association of academically inept and formulaic constraints on a child's learning and his ideology of providing opportunity and space for students. His beliefs give rise to a team of civic leaders who struggle to reach their aspirations and get their voices heard. The fifth-grade students learn to work with an amazing real life "curriculum" which helps them dip into the politics of education. Along the way, they learn skills and connect with concepts that they would not have learned with their basic textbook work. The book ends with the emphasis that sometimes learning along the way in the pursuit of achieving the goals is more valuable than the actual goal itself.

Authentic learning at its best!

I have had the honor to not only know Dr. Schultz, but also his students from room 405. I was a fifth grade teacher at the time, and I tried to get my students involved with what his students were fighting for by them serving as pen pals and by personally making a visit to the school to witness their fight. Brian is a gifted educator who inspires the reader to reflect upon how they teach and learn. Whether or not the reader is a teacher is irrelevant. Humans constantly teach and learn throughout their lifetime. Brian demonstrates that when given some choice in what is deemed important to the student, authentic and meaningful learning can and will occur. This is true in both children and adults. This journey was important for the students of room 405 as well as for Brian. The students were given choice in what they would learn and how, and the teacher learned while taking the journey with them. Teaching and learning embrace each other, and Brian shows us that through his experiences with his students. This is a must-read not only for teachers and administrators, but for parents and those who are lifelong learners.
