The Egyptian Museum houses the world's greatest collection of Egyptian treasures and antiquities, tens of thousands of stunning and fascinating objects dating from the earliest Predynastic times right through to the Greek and Roman Periods. Visitors to this great storehouse may become easily overwhelmed by the vast number of objects on display. But here for the first time is the world's best-known Egyptologist's personal introduction to the unmissable highlights of the Museum-Zahi Hawass's own selection of his favorite 200 exhibits. For each piece, he gives some background to its discovery and significance, and describes what it means for him in terms of the art or the history of ancient Egypt, and why it strikes a personal chord.
"Due to my love of the Egyptian Museum, I thought that it would be wonderful to write a guide to its treasures, and to talk about my favorite objects within."-Zahi Hawass

A 'Must Have'.....
By Shadowsmom42
Every single positive word that a person can think of falls into this book. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in the past, present AND future of Egyptian history. (When I say 'future', you will read in the introduction, by Zahi Hawass, what plans are in place for the Grand Museum of Egypt that is currently under construction.)
The photographer, Sandro Vannini, took some of the most beautiful photos I have ever seen of Egyptian antiquities.
This book covers everything you can think of: Predynastic and Early Dynastic period, The Old Kingdom, the Monuments of the Middle Kingdom, the Monuments of the New Kingdom, Amarna rooms, Monuments of the Later Periods, History of the Royal Mummies, History of the Royal Tombs of Tanis, History of the Tutankhamun Collection, Jewellery of Ancient Egypt......and more.
If you're anything like me and love the history of Ancient Egypt but can't afford to travel to Egypt to visit all the different museums, this is a book you can not pass up. This book is a Collector's Edition that anyone would be proud to display!

Light Reading!
By Pierre Gauthier
This review is from: Inside the Egyptian Museum Visitors Guid (Paperback)
This book essentially presents photographs of various artefacts in Cairo's Archeological Museum, each with a caption consisting of a short paragraph. This actually succeeds in making the reader appreciate each piece better than in the Museum itself. Anyone who has visited this crowded, messy and dusty place realizes however that such is not a major achievement.

The photographs are all in full colour, set on a black background and quite beautiful. There is, however, a definite lack of coordination with the captions. Often enough, the photo will only show a close-up of a piece but the text will describe the whole. It is awkward for instance to read about a statue's feet when only the head is shown!

The lay-out is strangely traditional, with each page being devoted either to text or photos. Though numerical references are provided, this is quite confusing as a caption may refer to a photo as much as 4 pages back or ahead.

Those who have visited the Cairo Museum may find this book worthwhile as a souvenir. However, those unfamiliar with Egyptian history and art should look elsewhere for a substantial introduction to the field.

Great Close ups
By S. Steer-Smith
An interesting guidebook to the Cairo Egyptian Museum. Zahi Hawass makes his choice of his favourite pieces from the museum. He starts with the replica of the Rosetta Stone and that the British Museum will not return it due to the security arrangements at Cairo Museum. Enough said. I could never understand why they have such a poor copy. The replica copy on the ground floor, which you are encouraged to touch, at the British Museum is much better. The photographs are excellent and Zahi's comments show his love of Ancient Egypt. For a more indepth guide "A walk through the Alleys of Ancient Egypt" by Abeer el-Shahawy is to be recommended

Attraction Explained: The science of how we form relationships, by Viren Swami

  • How much does appearance matter in the formation of romantic relationships?
  • Do nice guys always finish last?
  • Does playing hard-to-get ever work?
  • What really makes for a good chat-up line?

When it comes to relationships, there’s no shortage of advice from self-help ‘experts’, pick-up artists, and glossy magazines. But modern-day myths of attraction often have no basis in fact or – worse – are rooted in little more than misogyny. In Attraction Explained, psychologist Viren Swami debunks these myths and draws on cutting-edge research to provide a ground-breaking and evidence-based account of relationship formation.

At the core of this book is a very simple idea: there are no ‘laws of attraction’, no foolproof methods or strategies for getting someone to date you. But this isn’t to say that there’s nothing to be gained from studying attraction. Based on science rather than self-help clichés, Attraction Explained looks at how factors such as geography, appearance, personality, and similarity affect who we fall for and why.

Review

"This is a beautifully written book, more like a novel than an academic textbook. But don’t be misled. The author is a world authority on the topic. Professor Swami has made sure the book is scrupulous accurate and that all assertions are research based. It is really un-put-downable."
- Adrian Furnham, Department of Psychology and Language Sciences, University College London, UK

"I trusted this author at once because, unlike the psychobabblers, he says from the start that there are no "laws" of attraction and no foolproof methods for getting someone to date you, let alone jump into bed with you. That isn’t to say there is nothing to be gained from studying the processes involved in what draws us together. It’s just a lot trickier than most self-help books would suggest. But with precision and no small wit – I found myself frequently laughing out loud - he explores the four key factors that shape the formation of most relationships: proximity, appearance, reciprocity and similarity. As he shows, studying attraction or relationships scientifically, far from destroying the magic and mystery of it all, can actually be helpful, whether you aspire to be lover or friend. He also satisfyingly nails my biggest bête noir: that "treat ‘em mean" is any sort of relationship advice."

 - Suzie Hayman, agony aunt, relationship counsellor, accredited TripleP (Positive Parenting Programme) parenting educator, broadcaster and author.

i would be much more eager to pay nearly $30 for a book if it was accessible on kindle unlimited to read first because samples don't truly provide enough information to convince me to make that much of an investment. if i am able to conclude the author has given me a solid product it gives me incentive to consider paying that much to return my appreciation. i suggest you do that or dramatically lower your price because there are many great books on many subjects that only ask for a few dollars and when customers with budgets must decide between one book with a high price or being able to afford for the same price several perfectly informative books only charging a few dollars... quantity is going to win. so please persuade me and others to feel that we are better off purchasing your book because yours seems to be a very promising resource but i'm not so desperate for this knowledge to justify being unwise with my money either.

Less Than Nothing: Hegel And The Shadow Of Dialectical Materialism, by Slavoj Zizek

For the last two centuries, Western philosophy has developed in the shadow of Hegel, an influence each new thinker struggles to escape. As a consequence, Hegel’s absolute idealism has become the bogeyman of philosophy, obscuring the fact that he is the defining philosopher of the historical transition to modernity, a period with which our own times share startling similarities.

Today, as global capitalism comes apart at the seams, we are entering a new period of transition. In Less Than Nothing, the product of a career-long focus on the part of its author, Slavoj Žižek argues it is imperative we not simply return to Hegel but that we repeat and exceed his triumphs, overcoming his limitations by being even more Hegelian than the master himself. Such an approach not only enables Žižek to diagnose our present condition, but also to engage in a critical dialogue with key strands of contemporary thought—Heidegger, Badiou, speculative realism, quantum physics, and cognitive sciences. Modernity will begin and end with Hegel.

Review
"Few thinkers illustrate the contradictions of contemporary capitalism better than Slavoj Žižek … one of the world’s best-known public intellectuals.”—John Gray, New York Review of Books

“A serious attempt to reanimate or re-actualize Hegel.”—Robert Pippin, author of Hegel’s Idealism

“A gifted speaker––tumultuous, emphatic, direct––and he writes
as he speaks.” —Jonathan Ree, Guardian

“The Hegel that Žižek loves is much like Žižek himself: a relentless iconoclast,
a restless wordsmith, an inventive thinker with a hatred of received wisdom,
an underminer of conventionally acknowledged truths. Žižek’s Hegel is a kind
of cosmic prankster.”—Bookforum

"A lucid rendering of modern society’s debt to Hegel."—Publisher’s Weekly

"The publication of Less Than Nothing is a major event in contemporary philosophy."—Hey, Small Press

Less Than Nothing: Hegel and the shadow of Dialectical Materialism
By Ã…ge Olav Mariussen, sociologist
This is a warning: once you open this book and start to read, it is almost impossible to close it. There are great balls of fire jumping out every time you turn a page. Since the book contains 1038 pages, some of them must be read carefully, it may disrupt your plans, not just for the evening, but for the following days. What is especially provoking and enlightening is the way Zizek is positioning not just Hegel, but also Marx, in a Christian tradition. By turning Christianity upside down, and defining it as an atheist religion, he is able to make sense of the myths in a new and surprising way. And at the same time it suddenly is possible to see the links between Christianity, Marxism, and the Communism of Eastern Europe in a new way. His interpretation of Hegel is to me as a sociologist new and refreshing. Zizek not just defends Hegel in an admirable way, he clarifies the deep contemporary relevance of Hegel and his version of dialectical materialism in a way which demands attention, not just among philosophers, but also among sociologists trying to make sense of our contemporary political economy. In a work with this scope, it goes without saying, there are also ideas and sections which demands further work and discussion. My critical comment (after 500 pages) is the way Marx political economy is treated. Seen from the point of departure of Hegel, it is justified with a main emphasis on Capital Volume 2, on circulation, and the relation to modern financial capitalism, which are our time-travelers, borrowing money from the future, and destroying it. According to my opinion, Marx analysis of technology, which is crucial to the ways in which humans relate to nature, deserves more attention. What appears to be a financial crisis is also, perhaps primarily, related to the ways in which technological paradigms destabilize the global economy and creates technological unemployment. A related issue is the missing debate on neo-classical economic theory, the phenomenological economy of Shutz and Löwe, and the classical debate between the old guard in the Frankfurter School and the Stalinist Marxists on the dialectics of nature.

Zizek's Best So Far
By Cristine V
It is a cardinal rule of pretentious academic existence that anyone who fancies herself a philosopher has to love Hegel. I've spent an embarrassing amount of time studying philosophy and even managed to pick up one of those fancy philosophy degrees that no one wants. But I'm just going to come right out and say it: I hate Hegel. I hate him so much that I seriously contemplated taking antidepressants during an undergraduate class on The Phenomenology of Spirit. I broke my computer trying to write a paper during the same class. And no, I didn't break it because I was typing furiously, inspired by new ideas. I broke it having a massive temper tantrum that has left my long-suffering dog permanently traumatized. Instead of re-reading Hegel to inspire further understanding (or further suicidal ideation), I responded to the Phenomenology of Spirit by making a video involving puppets, robots and a rapping dog all emphasizing exactly how much Hegel sucks. That is how much I hate this philosopher.

But the thing is, I really love Zizek. Even when he goes off on his insane rants wherein everything somehow ties back to Lacan, vampires or communism, I find myself swooning. I love him so much that I have spent a significant portion of my time trying to convince my husband that, were I to actually meet Zizek, we would immediately become best friends and would wear matching friendship bracelets. I've always ignored Zizek's respect for Hegel, thinking it was just one of his many weird predilections that I don't really need to understand.

But Zizek has sold me. Hegel is not all of the horrible things I have called him (but damnit, he is some of them). It took a crazed Slovenian philosopher to help me appreciate a crazed German one. I'm not ready to drink the kool-aid of Hegel being the greatest philosopher ever just yet, but it's a start. And it's a tribute to Zizek that I've made that start. Don't read all of the critical readers and guides to the Phenomenology of Spirit. Read this.

For Zizek fans, this book is a breath of fresh air. I've complained quite a bit about Zizek repackaging and recycling old material into a "new" book every six months or so. But this one is truly novel, and it's probably his most coherent work to date.

I wish I could address more about the actual contents of the book, but as any Hegel or Zizek reader knows, it's virtually impossible to reduce their philosophy to a few pithy statements; this is both a strength and a weakness, but also serves as evidence that the book's length and complexity is necessary. It's challenging reading, and you may have to re-start it several times, but it is definitely worth the work.

Zizek's major philosophical declaration
By Ivo Maropo
This is quite probably the most treasured book I own. You can take my Nietzsche, Hegel or Lacan away, but don't you ever dare separating me from this book. I'll try my best to avoid simply summarizing the ideas of this giant theoretical masterpiece (which I find to be virtually impossible - and even dialectically counterproductive), and rather try focusing on its "mission", its inherent project and its most basic general propositions. This book is an immense zeit/weltgeist. It's Zizek's once-in-a-lifetime effort at delivering "a high quality failure", as his Beckettian leninism would have probably put it.

One also has the feeling that a hegelian totality (or the lacanian notion of the non-All) is also in course here throughout this entire effort, immanently preventing it from acquiring "wholeness", as any proud hegelian/lacanian would have probably noticed it. This difficulty also reflects our own epoch - a transitioning one akin to Hegel's and the start of modernity and the french/haitian revolution. It's a book expressing a profound political, ethical and philosophical deadlock.

The core of the zizekian project is basically to rehabilitate materialism - a sort of "hegelian materialism beyond Hegel" (which means "to be even more hegelian than the master himself"), not only repeating his philosophy, but (much more critical and important) his "transcendental gesture".

No wonder Zizek decided to really engage with Quantum Physics only in the very last chapter of the book, which was riskly named "The Ontology of Quantum Physics", where Zizek tries to do precisely what physicists themselves do not dare to do: to ontologize their own crazy mathematical abstractions and show us how mutually beneficial it can be to both Philosophy and Physics.

This project is also clearly synthesized in his use of Democritus' concept of "den", from which Zizek created his own ontology, his own "dentology", "a transcendental-materialist theory of subjectivity", as succintly put by american Philosophy professor Adrian Johnston, in his excellent book Zizek's Ontology. For Zizek's project to take place, he had to engage himself with all the great theoretical and empirical phenomena of our time.

From his classical philosophical/psychoanalitic approach to cognitive sciences, biogenetics and even Quantum Physics, this book has it all. But its greatness, like all great analysis of communism, lies on the high quality of its own failure - a high quality failure also present in his newest major theoretical books (like his Absolute Recoil: Towards a New Foundation of Dialectical Materialism).

Having said that, this feels more systematic than Zizek has ever felt, even though, at the same time, a sensation of both "ontological and epistemological incompleteness" never truly leaves it behind. This is one big, crazy and fascinating book whose relevance to our weltgeist should be definitely felt in the years to come.

Motivating & improving
By Iceton
This book came at the right time for me. I've been outgoing my whole life, but feeling more secluded as more of my work is alone and I moved to a new place where I don't know anyone.

1. It's a good reminder of why relationships and social skills are a good investment. I saw the review saying this is too obvious, but there are lots of demands on my time and the buildup motivated me to give relationships priority. Some things I've always taken for granted, like why is it not enough just to be likably present? Why do you want to contribute your time & energy, and to which people? Reconsidering these things actively felt necessary.

2. I found it almost all actionable. The storytelling exercise is a good way to practice alone, and some people may want more step-by-step directions. I just made a list for each chapter of things I can do better, and I focus on one chapter a day. Best to practice with people, I think.

3. The low-hanging fruit is clearly marked. This is where most people are deficient. This is where you see the biggest impact when you improve. If you make a lot of acquaintances but have few good friends, pay extra attention here.

It's a great book, but I feel like it lacked a lot of hard, actionable steps. Many of the reviews point out the story telling exercise, because it's the one actionable step in the book. For most you get clear advice, but if you don't know how to even begin implementing the advice, you're screwed without more resources. I felt like that was kind of a shame.

I had to think about this. I wondered if I should give it a four star. I want to go off topic for a bit and say that I'm mad that I missed it when it was free for a day. Anyways, this book is worth buying. I am very interested about how to make and keep more friends. I found a lot of tips in this book to be helpful. I was amazed at the suggested story telling exercise and I will definitely do it. I found myself highlighting a lot of things to try. I have read other popular books such as "How To Win Friends and Influence People," but they don't seem to be an immediate aid for me like this one is.

In Unbowed, Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai recounts her extraordinary journey from her childhood in rural Kenya to the world stage. When Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, she began a vital poor people’s environmental movement, focused on the empowerment of women, that soon spread across Africa. Persevering through run-ins with the Kenyan government and personal losses, and jailed and beaten on numerous occasions, Maathai continued to fight tirelessly to save Kenya’s forests and to restore democracy to her beloved country. Infused with her unique luminosity of spirit, Wangari Maathai’s remarkable story of courage, faith, and the power of persistence is destined to inspire generations to come.

From Publishers Weekly
Maathai, a 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, presents a matter-of-fact account of her rather exceptional life in Kenya. Born in 1940, Matthai attended primary school at a time when Kenyan girls were not educated; went on to earn a Ph.D. and became head of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Nairobi before founding Kenya's Green Belt Movement in 1977, which mobilized thousands of women to plant trees in an effort to restore the country's indigenous forests. Because Kenya's environmental degradation was largely due to the policies of a corrupt government, she then made the Green Belt Movement part of a broader campaign for democracy. Maathai endured personal attacks by the ruling powers-President Moi denounced her as a "wayward" woman-and engaged in political activities that landed her in jail several times. When a new government came into power in 2002, she was elected to Parliament and appointed assistant minister in the Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources. Despite workmanlike prose, this memoir (after The Green Belt Movement) documents the remarkable achievements of an influential environmentalist and activist. Photos not seen by PW.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The mother of three, the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate, and the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Wangari Maathai of Kenya understands how the good earth sustains life both as a biologist and as a Kikuyu woman who, like generations before her, grew nourishing food in the rich soil of Kenya's central highlands. In her engrossing and eye-opening memoir, a work of tremendous dignity and rigor, Maathai describes the paradise she knew as a child in the 1940s, when Kenya was a "lush, green, fertile" land of plenty, and the deforested nightmare it became. Discriminated against as a female university professor, Maathai has fought hard for women's rights. And it was women she turned to when she undertook her mission to restore Kenya's decimated forests, launching the Green Belt Movement and providing women with work planting trees. Maathai's ingenious, courageous, and tenacious activism led to arrests, beatings, and death threats, and yet she and her tree-planting followers remained unbowed. Currently Kenya's deputy minister for the environment and natural resources, Nobel laureate, visionary, and hero, Maathai has restored humankind's innate if nearly lost knowledge of the intrinsic connection between thriving, wisely managed ecosystems and health, justice, and peace. Inspiring but sometimes contradictory
By Caroline M. Mwaniki
I enjoyed reading Wangari Maathai's memoir, especially her childhood, and journey to early adulthood, and the final years of her work after she won the Nobel Prize. Her struggle to protect Kenyan forests and promote women's rights and advocate for environmental protection through the Green Belt Movement, especially under a repressive government regime, is admirable and inspiring.

Two things I struggled with as I read about her work with the Green Belt Movement are her tendencies to belittle Kenyans and portray herself as an absolute victim.

Because of her work, Maathai was constantly harassed by local government authorities. During these moments, she would appeal to her international networks of friends and colleagues to encourage the Kenyan Government to put the environment before destructive developmental projects, arguing that Kenyans are too busy trying to earn a living, or not as aware of environmental conservation as people in the West are. This is a contradiction with what she claims several times about generations past who had systems of protecting the environment. She even demonstrates it through stories about growing up amongst lush rivers and forested areas in the forties and fifties.

Finally, in the face of constant adversity, it may be inevitable to take the tone of a victim, constantly attacking the mechanisms and institutions that prevent one from doing their work. Maathai falls into this trap, which diminishes her heroism and struggle. As a woman who achieved such prominence, she could have held her head up a little higher, especially in her lucid writing, to give a more powerful account of the years she spent building the Green Belt Movement.

One of my heroes
By Brendan J. Mcsherry
One of my heroes! Kenya's Wangari Maathai was the first African woman and first environmentalist to win the Nobel peace prize; she was also a fearless activist for democracy, women's rights, and sustainable development, and a brilliant story teller, too! I used the book in a number of college courses, to great avail. Many students found her story inspirational, unique and clearly told.

Great Biography
By Kirk H. Hipps
I read a copy and then bought several to give to friends. Wangari is an incredible woman who starts by giving a good background on the effects of colonialization of Africa socially, politically and environmentally. As a founder of the Green Belt Movement she has been through incredible things, sometimes horrific in nature, yet she has the ability to step back and analyze the events so well. No wonder she won a Noble Prize. This book should be required reading.
