Dwayne E. Clayden, EMT-P, M.E.M. Dwayne Clayden is the Assistant to the Medical Director for The City of Calgary Emergency Medical Services and responsible for Prehospital Research, Quality Improvement, in-house Paramedic Program, and the Tactical EMS Team. Previously Dwayne was the Emergency Medical Service Chief for the City of Airdrie Emergency Services in Airdrie, Alberta, Canada from June 1996 to October 2001. Bryan E. Bledsoe, D.O., F.A.C.E.P., EMT-P Dr. Bryan Bledsoe is an emergency physician with a special interest in prehospital care. He is board certified in emergency medicine and is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Great Pharm book

I love this book! It is a great compliment to the text that I am using for my Paramedic class. It was a required text for class, but I really like the book. It is easy to read and the information is not only interesting but easy to understand.

This book has helped enhance my learning in my studies to becoming a Paramedic.

Many errors

While the general setup and information in this book is good, it has several errors and inconsistencies that make it very difficult to use.

Many of the drugs are listed multiple times for their different uses (for instance, epi is in the cardiovascular section, the allergies & anaphylaxis section, and the respiratory section) and these separate listings may have different information in them. This would be okay if the "quick reference" in the back were complete or accurate, but it is not. This means that if you want a thorough summary of all uses of a particular drug, you have to go to the index and look up every individual listing for a particular drug and consolidate it yourself.

The book also has important errors (you CANNOT give adenosine for Vtach, etc.), and gives irrelevant information (the book is very helpful in telling you that the peak effects of Solu-Medrol occur in 4-8 days when given IM, but says nothing about giving it IV, which is the only way a paramedic would ever administer it in the field; for some other drugs it does this and does not even state what route the pharmacokinetics are for.)

The general "how to study pharmacology" type information in the first few chapters is good, but I do not think that this book makes a very good reference. I am hoping to see a new, revised and updated edition soon, that would fix some of the current problems.

Good resource, even if it is a bit dated

Has the majority of drugs you will encounter in EMS; great "quick reads" on the drugs in the back appendices, with comprehensive readouts on the drug itself in each section. Covers the pharmacology behind each class very well. Would recommend if you just need an additional resource on hand at your station or in your house for personal reference.

Internet 101

I bought this book because a link to it showed up on my Twitter feed, it sounded like an interesting subject, and I enjoyed the sample excerpt. Remarkably, it appears to be the first proper exploration of the cultural phenomenon that is the Epic Fail. I'm like, WTF?

Anyway, this brief ebook far exceeded my expectations, offering a very thoughtful and articulate analysis of a particular category of hubris, and of its often cruel aftermath. The author builds each chapter around a particular exemplum of Epic Failure, drawing not only on the internet, but also the cultural oddities of yesteryear, and events from his own past. Though eclectic, occasionally anecdotal, and often very, very funny, the book never feels scattered or unserious. Thought-provoking read.

Hopefully this book will one day be on a required reading list for people applying to be allowed to use the internet.

Intelligent cultural critique intelligently written

With "Epic Fail," Mark O'Connell has rocketed to the top (or near-top) of my Authors To Watch list. Although he has written for various outlets including The Millions, Slate, The Guardian, etc., this was the first longform piece of his I've read, and I was completely dazzled.

"Epic Fail" is intelligent cultural critique intelligently written. Like others, I read (rather, devoured) it in one sitting; I was frequently nodding in agreement and even more frequently making notes in order to preserve O'Connell's fresh insights and adroit prose. I normally hesitate to bestow five-star reviews, but for my part "Epic Fail" is a no-brainer. I've already recommended the essay both publicly and privately.

To those who wish it had more of a "conclusion" or final chapter: I found that each chapter contained its own conclusions and that the piece as a whole stands on its own without need for a summation. Even those chapters that end on an ambiguous note are done so (in my opinion) intentionally -- requiring the reader to wrestle with the questions and come to his or her own conclusions.

Do not be fooled; although it may look like it, this is not brainless BuzzFeed-lit. "Epic Fail" is an engaging and erudite discourse in pop clothing.

A Scholarly Analysis of the Essence of Badness

Well, I loved the books "Star-Spangled Kitsch" and "The Incomplete Book of Failures," too. O'Connell nails the topic of why awful writers, artists, musicians, and film makers are so compelling and, in their own perverse way, eternal. I mean, Amanda Ros and Julia A. Moore are perennial favorites of mine (I gave their books out for Christmas 2013 (repeatedly)). In some ways, the author discusses the nature of creativity and the artists' perspectives. When I circulated my first screenplay, which actually got some attention in Hollywood, I honestly did not know if it was any good. Julia and Amanda had no such doubts about their work. (Julia A. Moore (aka "The Sweet Singer of Michigan") had revenge on her critics: "The editors that have spoken against my work have went beyond reason." (Take that!))

Great Book for Papers!

I had to write a twelve page book report and give a five minute presentation for one of my classes. This book gave me so much information, I stretched it out to sixteen pages and a twenty-five minute lecture! While the reading is definitely dry, it gives you any argument needed for female genital mutilation, both for and against the practice. I loved the setup. It was easy to skim through because it was broken into titled chapters that discussed points of issues entirely. There is minimal repetition in this book. The book was more geared towards abolishing it by giving detailed descriptions of rituals, personal experiences, diagrams, charts and graphs. This was definitely one of those "eye opener" books. Brainy, but in a good way...

Tim Brownson's little brain book is easy to read, well-researched and packed with enough entertaining and perplexing nuggets to get those neurons fired up.

We've all asked ourselves at one point, "Why do I do the things that I do?" or "Why do I think the way I do?" This book sheds light on our cognitive biases and how to change them.

Besides the 70 brain facts, Brownson does a good job of sharing anecdotes and stories about your brain on psychology. How to Avoid Getting Ripped Off helps you `be more aware of cognitive biases, especially in situations that may cost you money if you are oblivious to what is going on.'

My favorite brain facts include:

~"...you have approximately 70,000 thoughts per day, although many will be the same ones looping round and round on your grooved cranial superhighway. And that is why we know that the quality of your thoughts is highly correlated to the quality of your life."

~"The reason it's uncomfortable when people stare hard at you is because your brain automatically perceives it as a threat. A smile breaks that discomfort though, as long as it's a genuine, warm smile."

Brainiac Factoids

Accessible, Digestible, Interesting and Cocktail worthy factoids about the brain. As a speech/language pathologist working with people with TBI ( traumatic brain injuries) and a Life coach this info confirms we are all a little "brain injured."

Fact #6:Scientists have proven beyond any reasonable doubt using fMRI’s, that reframing negative situations literally rewires your brain by creating new neural pathways and can make you a happier, more easygoing person.
Very briefly and in case you are unaware, a reframe is where you decide to look at a negative situation in a more empowering light.
It doesn’t involve changing the actual event (that would be delusional) just adjusting your view of it. If you want to get good at reframing, simply ask yourself the following two questions (or whichever is most pertinent at the time) when things aren’t going to plan.

It's classic Tim.

I'm usually more interested in the mind, but this book makes a very important distinction between "the brain" vs. "the mind." That insight was worth the read alone.

This book is for you if:
1. You are looking for a brainy (but not intimidating brainy) read;
2. Want to meet (or get another hit of) Tim's classic style of no-nonsense, British-infused humour (he lives in the US now and he might be integrating a little too well ... you be the judge);
3. To experience (what I want to call) "mouthy compassion."

The reason he gets four stars and not five is because he left me hanging. Indeed. He seems to have recovered from being a "miserable pessimistic jerk" (his words, not mine) and transformed himself over the last decade into a rather endearing fella (in my opinion). There's a story missing in there somewhere mister.
