Set in any era, Dick Thornburgh’s brilliant career would merit study and retelling. He was the first Republican elected to two successive terms as governor of Pennsylvania. He served in the Department of Justice under five presidents, including three years as attorney general for Presidents Reagan and Bush. As undersecretary-
general of the United Nations, he was the highest-ranking American in the organization and a strong voice for reform.
Nationally, Thornburgh is best remembered for his three years as attorney general, when he managed some of the most vexing legal matters of the modern age: the Savings and Loan and BCCI scandals; controversy over the “Iraqgate” and INSLAW investigations and the Wichita abortion clinic protests; and prosecutions of Michael Milken, Manuel Noriega, and Marion Barry, as well as those involved in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and the Rodney King beating.
As governor of Pennsylvania, he faced the nation’s worst nuclear accident, weeks after his inauguration in 1979. Thornburgh's cool-headed response to the Three Mile Island disaster is often studied as a textbook example of emergency management. His historic 1992 battle against Harris Wofford for the late John Heinz III’s Senate seat is one of several political campaigns, vividly recalled, that reveal the inner workings of the commonwealth’s political machinery.
Thornburgh reveals painful details of his personal life, including the automobile accident that claimed the life of his first wife and permanently disabled his infant son. He presents a frank analysis of the challenges of raising a family as a public figure, and tells the moving story of his personal and political crusade that culminated in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
This revised and updated edition includes a new chapter devoted to the highlights of Thornburgh’s continuing career. He offers fascinating insights into his experiences as Bankruptcy Court Examiner for the WorldCom proceedings, leading the investigation into the CBS News report on President George W. Bush’s military service record, representing Allegheny County coroner Cyril Wecht in a trial over alleged misuse of public office, and as part of the K&L Gates team consulted by Chiquita Brands during a federal investigation over payments made to Colombian guerillas and paramilitaries to protect banana growers.

Dick Thornburgh is a bold-faced liar. One has only ...
By Will Harvey
Dick Thornburgh is a bold-faced liar. One has only to read what he says of Mrs. Marion Carr Knox on page 377-78 and compare that with her actual interview with Rather to realize that Thornburgh and Louis Boccardi of the Associated Press were twisting Mrs. Knox's testimony. However, the chilling reality is that with the arrival of the October 2015 premier of Robert Redford and James Vanderbilt's film TRUTH based on Mary Mapes' TRUTH AND DUTY and the absence of any actors scripted to play either Marion Carr Knox or Col. Jerry Killian and we are seeing a Joseph Goebbels-type piece of propaganda which the Thornburg/Boccardi "commission" of CBS was as well in the wake of the Rather/Mapes story, but there's more amiss here than that. Everywhere Rather and Mapes are reported to have blown open the story of Abu Ghraib before moving on to the GWB National Guard memos when, in fact, Amnesty International reported it first. Then you have to deal with the fact that Rather and Donald Rumsfeld, the master mind of Abu Ghraib was a co-owner with Rather of a 9000 acre ranch in Las Vegas, New Mexico. So Marion Carr Knox is relegated to less than two pages and one index reference in Thornburg's book and drops from the Redford/Vanderbilt film's cast of characters. Rather and Mapes get a Peabody Award for their documentary on Abu Ghraib which they didn't uncover and Marion the honest U.S. citizen is probably told by Thornburgh and Boccardi to shut the hell up or expect what? TRUTH. Just in time to reset the clock for another Bush-wacking!
But wait.....here's reason not to swallow Thornburg's and Boccardi's assessment of Marion Carr Knox's testimony as anything other that what it was.....a hatchet-job.
As one analyst of the Thornburg/Boccardi pretzel twisting has written.....
"Mapes on page 84-85 of Truth and Duty explains that she had the testimony of GWB's Air National Guard Brigadier General who retired in 1986 who in 2000 had called the GWB events in 1972 a "fraud". While Mapes claims that the General would not go on record in 2000 by giving a 60 Minutes interview for fear that he would have to move out of his apartment complex because he was surrounded by Bush supporters and that he was remarrying, Mapes appears to have no sense of urgency in telling the story between the summer and November of 2000. The man was no 'deep throat' that had anonymously supported the Woodward and Bernstein Watergate coverage of cover-up by the Washington Post. Mapes had the living, breathing, identified witness in tow. Brigadier General Belisarios Flores was remarried on November 4, 2000 in San Antonio (Bexar County Marriage License #149275). Having this testimony, were the Rather and Mapes memos even necessary? A resounding 'NO'!"

Autobiography of a Pennsylvania Governor
By Leon Czikowsky
As the title of this autobiography suggests, and the pages that follow confirm, this is the story of Dick Thornburgh, who has a strong and lengthy legal career. That this legal career was interrupted by eight years of service as Governor almost would appear a diversion from someone who rose from the Board of Directors of his local ACLU to be a United States Attorney and ultimately U.S. Attorney General. Yet, as the book informs, Dick Thornburgh was definitely a politician who successfully balanced switching between political and legal careers.
It was Dick Thornburgh's poltical work that caught the attention of Republican Party leader Elsie Hillman that led her to successfully push the political buttons to get Thornbugh the position of U.S. Attorney. Thornburgh had earlier worked in a Senate campaign and run a losing race for Congress. Although his preparation for the job was lacking, as Thornburgh admits his initial reaction was "What does a U.S. Attorney do?", Thornburgh had a distinguished career as a federal prosecutor. He went after organized crime figures and public corruption, although his zeal fadedat times, as when he refused a request by Arlen Specter to investigate some fellow Republicans on allegal illegal campaign payments.
A weakness of the book is it lacks depth of analysis in explaining how he chose many of his policies as Governor. The book excels in describing the Three Mile Island crisis. Here, the book is descriptive and reflective and leaves readers with useful advice on crisis management. Readers of legal history and Pennsylvania politics will find this an important book to examine.
