John Comeaux has been writing poems since age 6 and has written comic strips, stories, puppet theater, plays, screenplays, and now his first book. Among his many interests are music, videography, theater, TED talks, science fiction, and enjoying audiobooks. He also enjoys camping, cruising, and outdoor grilling. And apparently his dishwashing skills are beyond compare.

Great Family Adventure Story

This is a very engaging story and one for all ages as excellent literature should be. The language is quite descriptive; the plot keeps the reader very involved and sometimes “on the edge of your seat.” The characters are well developed and very believable (including the trolls). The illustrations are a wonderful addition to this family adventure story. I highly recommend it; I am a former librarian and a lover of excellent stories and good literature.

Pretty good book.

As a psychology major wanting to focus on the counselling aspects, a sensation and perception course was definitely not high on my 'want to take' list. But, not only was the class entertaining and informative, but this text was pretty darn good. It wasn't nearly as dry as my usual psychology text book, and it was highly informative, going into depth and giving examples to tie everything together. If you are a psychology professor, I would highly recommend this text for your class. It made me, someone not interested in the topic at all, not only love the class but continue to use the knowledge that I gained in real world settings.

Outdated Code Makes this book a pain to learn from.

I'm working through this book as I work to transition from PHP development to Rails with Ajax. I'm starting a new project from scratch and wanted to take on this "newish" methodology that is supposed to make my development more fun and way faster.

Well I bought the book a year ago when I was thinking the same thing. But I didn't find the time to invest in a new language until now.

Unfortunately Rails 2.0 has been out for a while and this book is written to 1.2 or something. Prototype is also in version 2.x and the book was written to something like 1.5

And that doesn't even mention that there are much different ways to get Ruby and Rails installed now.

So far I've spent a few days just making Rails work at all on my XP computer. It turns out that there is now a package called InstantRails that you just unzip and run in place. So I wasted those days trying to track down the components described in this book to no avail.

Now that I'm working with the code, I'm finding that the examples simply don't work in about half the cases due to the deprecated functions and new naming conventions and so on. It's like learning how it was done two years ago along with how it is done now. And it's really slowing me down.

Every time something doesn't work, instead of learning the lesson intended by the book, I spend a lot more time learning how to troubleshoot the problem until I find the new correct way of doing the same thing.

So I can't say that I'm not learning from this book. I'm learning a lot. It just that I'm learning by correcting errors on my own instead of by clear examples that work. It's kind of painful and slow.

The book seems to be good other than that. My only complaint is that some of the terms used aren't clearly explained early on. But I think most programmers can get past those and just keep reading and be fine.

I just don't recommend buying this book anymore. If there's an updated version to cover the current versions of the applications, that might be worth getting.

Succint intro, but not much more

I bought this book thinking I would learn a lot. I've done very little JavaScript and Ajax before so I was expecting to soak this up like a sponge. I did the examples and read through the book and felt like I got a great introduction to using Ajax with Rails. That's the problem though, I feel like the book needs more meat, especially in the RJS section. Now that I have a good foundation, I'm looking elsewhere for more intermediate concepts that should've been part of this text.

Straightforward and Comprehensive

This is a great book to get. The author is an expert in the field - I've seen him speak in person, and read his articles in the past. The book does not disappoint.

It's really three books in one. The first part is a tutorial, taking you through the paces and up the ladder of frameworks. You go from JavaScript to Prototype to Scriptaculous to RJS, chapter by chapter, and it really makes sense. Then you get chapters on Usability, Performance, Testing, and Security, which really cover more than just the basics - Mr. Raymond shows you how to build your application around Ajax, and do it intelligently. The chapter on Performance had a better explanation of caching than I'd read anywhere else!

The second part is two chapters, two comprehensive references on Prototype and Scriptaculous, respectively. Combined, these might be worth the price of the book for some folks. I'm sure I'll be referring to these pages for some time.

Finally, you have three real-world application examples. Again, these might be worth the price of the book as well! You get a Review Quiz, Photo Gallery, and Intranet Workgroup application. The code is available at the O'Reilly site now, so you don't have to type them in, of course. Still, it's nice to read about them in the book, and why the author wrote them the way he did. All of the applications are useful, and use best-practices throughout.

It's nice to see O'Reilly starting to get their Rails titles out. Predictably, they're awesome. They always choose the best authors, edit and proof the books meticulously, and put out a quality product. Highly recommended.

Blandine Calais-Germain is the celebrated author of Anatomy of Movement, Anatomy of Movement: Exercises, The Female Pelvis: Anatomy and Exercises, and Anatomy of Breathing. Her lifelong involvement with dance, both as performer and teacher, led to an interest in other physical disciplines and to more formal study of the complex and integrated movements of the body. She studied physiotherapy at the French School of Orthopedics and Massage in Paris, and subsequently developed an innovative method for teaching the physical structures of anatomy in relation to movement, which she teaches at workshops in France to students from all over the world.

Great for students, yogis, and teachers!

Fantastic book and required reading for any serious yoga practitioner or teacher. I'm sure most customers are probably in medical school that need this, but regardless of why you need this book, know that it is brand new, has sharp, detailed pictures and explanations, and is at the top of the list for anyone desiring to learn more about how the human body moves, what parts of the anatomy are utilized, and a broad overview of anatomy in general. For beginner and intermediate levels.

Very effective and practical guide

Some years ago I incorporated many of these exercises when rehabbing my back after a car accident. The exercises/stretches were practical and effective. I have NO chronic, recurring dysfunction and I credit that in part to staying active with these gentle but purposeful exercises rather than loading up on pain meds and "resting" it. Movement is essential to restoring function! Highly recommend.

Excellent book for beginning and intermediate students

_Anatomy of Movement_ by Blandine Calais-Germain is an excellent book for someone who is new to kenesiology, and also for the beginning and intermediate athlete.

As its title suggests, _Anatomy of Movement_ focuses on the bones, muscles, ligaments & tendons we use when we move. Each major section of the body, such back, arms, legs, etc., gets its own section in the book.

The anatomical drawings are very well done. The book has enough text to explain the drawings, but not so much as to overwhelm the reader. There are drawings showing the directions each muscle pulls in during different types of movements. Those drawings are VERY helpful to understanding the kinesiology of the body.

There was also an extensive section in the beginning on anatomical terms, such as dorsal, dorsiflexion, lateral, anterior, posterior, etc. The sections on the spine, pelvis, & knees were exceptionally well done.

I am not a bodyworker, masseuse, or dancer; but as an engineer who sits in an office chair all day and does martial arts and occasionally yoga to relax, I have developed a keen interest in kenesiology and anatomical studies. _Anatomy of Movement_ didn't specifically tell me the mechanics of any single karate kata** or yoga asana, and it didn't specifically explain why bad posture in a chair leads to a sore back when I walk around -- but it did give me a sound base of knowledge when I started reading other books about specific movements and activities.

** - _Anatomy of Movement_ did help me understand how joint locks on the shoulder work.

It is fitting that Ecco Press, which reissued McCarthy's novels when most of the world was neglecting them, should publish a play that is still in search of a theater. But this story of deep trouble amidst four generations of a black family in Louisville, Kentucky, places McCarthy-arguably America's best living novelist-in the long tradition of novelists who have tried the dramatic form and failed to meet its elusive demands. There are some wonderful scenes, and obvious problems of stagecraft-such as cue lines for a god and impractical sets, including a real stone wall-are nothing a good director can't surmount. But a deeper flaw is that its conflicts are both overly transparent and insufficiently bodied forth in dramatic action. The main character, Ben, is wrong when he tells us that stonemasonry is man's first gift and oldest craft. Those in theater know there is an older one whose secrets are just as long, as hard, and as necessary to master. Recommended for comprehensive literature collections.

National Book Award-winning novelist McCarthy does something daring for these days. He, white, proffers a play about a black family, a drama devoid of defensive race-consciousness in either himself or his characters. The Telfairs are an old Louisville family who, in the early 1970s, include four generations under one roof. Ben, 32, is the play's central character and, like Tom Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, its explicator (two Bens appear onstage, one engaged in the action, the other at a podium). Ben earlier quit graduate school to follow his grandfather's trade, stonemasonry, which the old man, now 101, still plies. During the play, which proceeds through several deaths, the disappearance of Ben's rebellious teenage nephew, and the disclosure of Ben's father's infidelity as well as a birth and Ben's sister's remarriage, Ben struggles to be the strong center of the family and, Ben-the-narrator makes explicit, to understand the spiritual meanings of his grandfather's life and attachment to his trade. Although it might be more comfortably realized onscreen than onstage, this thoughtful drama is one fine response to the cry for art to be concerned with family values. Thank God for Cormac McCarthy

I don't usually read plays, but I bought this one because, after finishing _Cities of the Plain_, I had read all of Cormac McCarthy's novels and was hungry for more. I was not disappointed. McCarthy's genius is no less evident in _The Stonemason_ than in any of his longer works; if anything, the shorter format of drama allows him to pack even more of his brilliant writing into every page. Many authors are said to have "an ear for dialogue"; McCarthy is the only one I know, of whom this is unquestionably true. Perhaps this explains the effortlessness with which he switches between his usual milieu (novels about white cowboys and outlaws) to the material in this book (a play about black craftsmen). Any more praise I can give to this work, and to McCarthy's other writings, cannot convey the tremendous power -- the sadness and joy - that one experiences in reading them. I only hope he still has some more books left in him.

A play, rather than a novel, THE STONEMASON is one of the least known of Cormac McCarthy's works. It also is one of the most positive and least violent of his works (although three of thirteen named characters die during it).

The play spans about four years of the life of the Telfair family in the black section of Louisville, Kentucky in the early 1970s. The patriarch of the family is Papaw, 101 years old, who still works as a stonemason, his trade for ninety years. Both his son, Big Ben, and his grandson, Ben, also work as stonemasons. Ben is the central figure in the staged drama, who tries to hold the family together as the vicissitudes of life and being black in Louisville, Kentucky buffet it about. In addition, a double of Ben periodically delivers a retrospective, philosophical commentary from a podium to the far left of the stage.

The two principal themes of THE STONEMASON have to do with family bonds and with the redemptive quality of honest work well done. Here, that work is freestone masonry. "[T]rue masonry is not held together by cement but by gravity. That is to say, by the warp of the world. By the stuff of creation itself. The keystone that locks the arch is pressed in place by the thumb of God."

For Ben, "that the craft of freemasonry should be allowed to vanish from this world is just not negotiable." So he continues in the trade (even though he was also educated to be a teacher). But to what end? Freestone masonry was a dying craft in 1975, more so in 1995 when the play was written, and yet even more so today. Is Ben's quest quixotic? Is redemption through hard, skilled, honest labor still possible? And, to allude to the line that I have used as the title for this review, does that long arc of the moral universe truly bend toward justice? THE STONEMASON itself does not provide an unequivocal "Yes". The play may ultimately be positive in outlook, but it requires an element of faith.

It is a restrained, quiet play, with just enough drama or suspense to sustain it. The story is certainly adequate. Stronger than the story, though, are four of the play's characters - Papaw, Ben, Ben's mother, and his wife Maven - each of whom is the proverbial salt of the earth and imbued with wisdom and grace. And if there is hope for the human endeavor, to my mind it lies in people like those four, rather than in the quasi-religious mysteries of stonemasonry and other such crafts.

I have some doubts whether the play could successfully be staged. (I would be interested in learning whether it indeed has been staged and what the response was.) It contains elaborate stage directions and some rapid shifts between very short scenes with quite different stage settings. It feels a little like a novella that somewhere in the process of creation was shoehorned into the format of a stage play. There are numerous passages exploring deep metaphysical or mythical mysteries that are typical of McCarthy - but they seem more appropriate to being read from the page than heard from the stage. On the other hand, the play is packed, from beginning to end, with strong, pitch-perfect dialogue, that should be just as pleasurable to hear from actors as it is to read.

This book just wasn't for me.

I'm sorry.. I really tried with this book. But unfortunately it just wasn't for me. I can read and devour books in one sitting. But this book took me days to get through! I kept putting it down to do other things.
It just didn't grab or hold my attention.
I liked Tate. But I hated how in the beginning he wanted Jonas to be all in. Pressuring him to make his decision. He seemed to go back in forth with that.
Then we have the whole Truvada thing. To just rely on that knowing you have people depending on you. To take such a big risk. Just because you think you're covered by a pill. I wasn't feeling that.
And Jonas.... I wasn't feeling him at all. Everything he said was a big WTH for me!
"He'd touched himself there a few times while j*rking off, but pen*trating himself, even with a finger, had felt like too much. Too gay."
Ughhhh...no.
Yes.... He changed as the book went on. But I just wasn't feeling him.
I wish I could have liked this book better.

Jonas is a closeted junior in college sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Delaware to keep him out of the spotlight after he's expelled from school in a frat-hazing-stunt-gone-wrong. Jonas has had a hard time living up to the perfect ideals of his strict, conservative parents, and suffers from a possible learning disability his folks won't accept.

Living with his aunt and uncle is a totally new world. Financially, they don't have much, but they share with real joy. They take care of their own, and more: they have tenants above their garage, Tate and his two younger sisters.

Tate is a 23 y/o out gay man who's not ashamed at his years of tricking to keep his family fed. Tate and his sisters were orphaned when he was just 16, and he fought hard to win their custody--not before they were both in bad spots in foster care. Tate strives to always put them first, especially his youngest sister Marnie who was assaulted and still suffers PTSD.

Tate is immediately attracted to Jonas, who's a right godly male specimen. Jonas is afraid of the feelings that Tate stirs, but can't help being awed by Tate's sheer awesomeness. Did I mention Tate runs (with his good friends) a homeless shelter for LGBT teens who've been kicked out by their parents? Yeah, Tate's the stand-up man Jonas would love to be. And that admiration allows Jonas to finally drop his facade. He's known he was gay for some time, but lives in fear of his parents cutting him off.

Of course, being in Delaware with his loving and open extended family--and Tate--allows Jonas to cut loose in a way he never could in college. And, Jonas pretty much loves it. Expect a lot of real hard times, though, because Daddy Dearest is one for the Internet Shame Awards.

I seriously fell into this book. It was such a heart-tugger, and really allowed these two young guys to explore a solid first relationship--one that was definitely heading into "forever" territory in the HEA ending. Jonas gets the help he needs to be a fully functional adult, one not beholden to his father's homophobic and controlling whims. Tate learns that he has to let go of his guilt surrounding the years he couldn't keep Addyson and Marnie protected, and build a new and brighter future for them, and himself, with Jonas.

There are some awesome secondary characters, and I'm sure we'll be lucky enough to experience their love stories going forward. I really ache for Marc and hope he finds a forever man.

The whole "gay teen homeless shelter" background was fantastic, and wonderfully rendered. It was clear exactly how razor-thin the operating budgets of these (unfortunately!!) necessary centers are, and I loved how Jonas did his very best to make Tate's place more financially solvent. I can only hope that a reconciliation for Jonas and his parents is on the horizon, and that a hefty donation from them will keep the doors open and the kids fed.

I haven't been accepting review requests or taking on review copies for tours and stuff unless they're written by authors that I know and love, simply because I already have a huge TBR pile of review books and ARCs that I need to get through. Seriously, it's bad. But when I saw the cover of this book come through my email from Kismet and read the synopsis, I knew I had to give it a try. I love LGBTQIA books but I don't read many. It's just my opinion, but quite often the ones that do come through are poorly written and the characters jump straight to bed, do the dirty, maybe one conflict and they're done. I'm not really a fan of that. When I read books with couples of the same sex (or any type of characters, really) I want the delicious bedrooms scenes to be heightened by the build up. I want to feel something other than just turned on.

I'm happy to say that Come What May did not disappoint. I admit that I did think the story, relation-ship wise, went a little fast. At times it felt like Jonas moved a little too quickly into the lifestyle he'd apparently always fought against. At the beginning of the story, we really got no hint that Jonas was gay and I assumed that he was unaware of it at well. The way he internalized with himself as well as the way he interacted with Tate. Very quickly however, he was admitting to Tate that he had always known, to some degree, that he was gay and that he had pretty much spent his life repressing it. I do feel like that was a little odd at times. He kind of went from end of the spectrum to the other in a super short amount of time.

I also love that this story dealt with some serious issues. I know quite a few people that either question their sexuality or identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc. and I HATE that a teenager, child, or even adult has to fear being thrown away by the people that should love them and support them the most because of who they are. I hate it so much. That is a kind of pain and suffering that someone is not able to understand fully unless they experience for themselves. Some of us end up never letting the people closest to us know who we fully are because we're afraid. And that sucks. No one should have to feel this way. I love that the Jonas and Tates story tackled that fully, from the shelter that Tate runs for homeless teens to the battle Jonas has to fight with his own father and mother. It was real and definitely important to the story.

Overall, I think this was a beautiful love story. The character were absolutely amazing and I fell in love with them. I'm curious as to what the author has in store for them in the rest of the All Saints series.
