Dr. Andrew Johnson is Professor of Holistic Education and the Director of the Accelerated Teacher Licensure Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Here he specializes in educational psychology, holistic education, literacy instruction, and teacher professional development.

Before moving into higher education he worked for 9 years in the public schools as a second grade teacher, wrestling coach, and as a gifted education coordinator. His most recent books include Making Connections in Elementary and Middle School Social Studies (SAGE) and Teaching Reading and Writing: A Guidebook for Tutoring and Remediating Students (Rowman and Littlefield).

Excellent for students and practitioners

Teachers, administrators, human service personnel are often encouraged to be engaged in action research. However, obtaining a sound, thorough but readable text to assist such professionals in conducting action research has been very difficult. This book fills this void wonderfully. The book lays out the steps of action research, provides practical examples all in a way that is scholastically sound but engaging and interesting reading. No mean feat for any book on research! I would highly recommend this for working practitioners and for guides for students involved in masters and even doctoral projects associated with action research. An excellent resource!!

Easy Read and Simplifies the Process

While working through my thesis I was required, and also elected, to purchase several books. Johnson's book is by far the easiest to read and puts this sometimes daunting process into a manageable perspective. It's not enough all by itself, but it is a must have addition.

An abundance of great information written in an enjoyable style!

I have read through the chapters of this book several times, and it is helpful from start to finish. It starts out with well written introductory chapters to catch people back up on the knowledge they need in order to properly grasp later concepts, and it does it well! Concepts such as a basic understanding of bits and x86 assembly that are not otherwise easily grasped. This book also contains a plethora of information on malware structure, basic tooling used to understand malware, and is often written in a playful and enjoyable manner that assists in making the content a pleasure to read. I know it says "Windows" in the title, but many of the topics covered and tooling carries over to other platforms as well.

The technical subject is quite high level but thanks to a wonderful and precise introduction about the basics of reverse engineering and disassembling, you can attain your goals of understanding malicious codes.

Providing this sort of seamless, wireless communication--at a low cost--is the goal of Bluetooth technology.

Devices that support Bluetooth automatically communicate with one another when they come within a 30-foot range of each other. If devices are compatible and properly authenticated, they start communicating, up to a maximum bandwidth of 1 Mbps. Although Bluetooth has a relatively short range and limited bandwidth, it requires very little power and is theoretically inexpensive. This makes it the ideal technology for portable devices that run on batteries, as well as devices that don't require massive bandwidth.

Bluetooth Demystified is a solid overview of Bluetooth technology for data-communication professionals who want to learn more about this new wireless specification. In many ways, it mirrors the official and more technical Bluetooth 1.0 specification (available online). For those who are familiar with the official specification, many of the diagrams will be familiar, and much of the basic information is the same. Success for this technology is not guaranteed, even though an impressive list of companies have promised to implement Bluetooth in their products. As the publisher of Bluetooth Demystified, the comments made by the Amazon customer from San Diego disturbs us. He/she is correct in that some typos do appear in the book. All technical books contain typos in their first printings -- given their complexity, it's unavoidable. These are quickly identified by observant readers like our reviewer below and are corrected in future printings. The blueooth standard is a rapidly emerging area and we have made every attempt to release Bluetooth Demystified in a timely manner -- but we have not cut any corners in reviewing and editing to do so. Like all our of titles, this book underwent rigorous editorial review. The errors the customer from San Diego refers to will be corrected in subsequent printings. Meanwhile, we welcome further Amazon customer comments on the content and utility of our book.

Lacking Technical Review

I am not a Bluetooth expert (hence the purchase of this book) but even to a Bluetooth novice like me it is obvious that this book has clearly not undergone technical review.
A quantitative example of a gross error that should have been caught well before publication, would be the claim, on more than one occasion, that the Bluetooth packet time slots are 625 ms (milliseconds) long as opposed to 625 us (microseconds). This is such a fundamental error it is almost laughable (if it weren't for the fact I paid good money for this book).
Another quantitative example would be in the description of CVSD modulation. Figure 2.7 which shows the relationship of the reference voltage to the signal voltage, with the axes unlabeled so we have to assume the x axis is time and the y axis is voltage, isn't monotonic along the time axis. i.e. the signal actually doubles back on itself with respect to the time axis. This is such a fundamental error it is almost laughable. (Sound familiar.) This error is such that it leads me to believe that the author did not have a good understanding of CVSD modulation.
Silly things like incorrect acronyms should have been caught by any proofreader; VIFR for Very Fast Infrared for example (again on more than one occasion).
This book was clearly rushed out, bypassing any proper review process, to be the first guide to Bluetooth technology, and unfortunately it shows.
I just received my copy of Bluetooth Revealed by Miller and Bisdikian, and from what I have read so far I would have to recommend this over Bluetooth Demystified (by a very large margin indeed).

No blue tooth to demystify

The book covers extraneous information that is not "relevant" to the Bluetooth standard. For example, it has a one-pager on Jini and the last line was "At this writing, Jini's future is in doubt". As a Java developer, I may not necessariy agree, but the book also fail to mention Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) if the author really wants to be impartial and covers the whole gamut of lookup and discovery technologies.
There were also mispelled commercial products (page 7) of Cisco's Aeronet (should be Aironet), but the accompanying digital photos clearly showed Aironet. This is one of the examples where both the author and McGraw-Hill's book editor failed their proofreading and/or research tasks.
The Bluetooth protocol descriptions came pretty much straight out of the Bluetooth specifications, without any comments or analyses. This indicates that that author, in this reviewer's opinion, has limited understanding on how or why the Bluetooth teams arrived at certain technical decisions. The last chapter on Global Scheme of 3G Wireless has little to do with Bluetooth.
I'm rather disappointed with the book in general since it contains information that can be downloaded directly from the Bluetooth Web site (for free). Rather than trying to rush out the "first" Bluetooth book, both the author and publisher should focus on delivering quality content rather than another door stop. Save your $US49.95 for another book.

Bluetooth without pain

This is the only book on Bluetooth I've actually been able to read. As in his excellent Telecommunications Encyclopedia Nathan really takes the time to explicate and explain concepts, not simply list them, as if you already knew most of what he's discussing. Page through the book: nearly every other page has a useful table or figure helping to illuminate the writing. The description of BT protocol architecture is the best I've ever seen. If you're a fan of Nathan's encyclopedias, or someone needing to learn (painlessly) the basics of Bluetooth, check this out.

Good stuff

I'm not going to judge to Queen's Indian Defence. It's reliable and used by many of the top Grand Masters around the world. That's all I'll say about that. The book, however, does a great job of providing explanitary prose so that we may learn this most playable and dynamic opening. The book's primary aim, I think, is to provide a playable repetiore against 1.d4, provide some analysis, but mainly emphasise understanding of the ideas and strategies behind black's and white's moves.
If you're considering taking up the Queen's Indian Defence as black, then this book will definitely help. Highly Recommended.

Very good

Being rated around 2000 I have just taken up 1.d4 seriously. This is my first book on this opening and it is very good in explaining the ideas. It doesn't show every possible variation, but as the author often says: "this position should be familiar". When I look through my games I often find themes that related to one of the example games in the book. However, at a higher level, this it probably not the book for you. Basically its purpose is to explain the ideas.

A big plus that it is, for my, at the exact right level. Many diagrams explaining lots of ideas, even in the side variation. This is a book that can be read without a board, although I suggest to download the games he refers to in the variations. You need to understand such concepts as "weak pawns", "open files" and "advantage of the bishop pair", so perhaps 1800 and up is a good level.

Very happy to see the author going into the endgames in many games, which is neglected in many books that only show you the opening moves. Also thankfully, the author never uses those += symbols that often are often useless.

Atrocious Writing

I like the presentation of the material -- the author explains the ideas behind the typical structures arising from this opening and gives some of the history, and he illustrates the main opening variations with complete games, explained throughout with text rather than endless variations.

It's unfortunate, however, that neither the author nor his editor appear to have even a basic command of English. Opening to a random page, I find by way of example the following: "The realization that an inaccuracy has granted the opponent an unnecessary active resource can be a very disorientating experience and even for a player of Beliavsky's enormous class ...." "Disorientating"? I find the use of that word rather disorienting. "Enormous" class?! A chess player may have an enormous talent or belly, but his class is high or low, it's not measured by size. This isn't mere quibbling. The author's insistence on (mis)using 25 words where 3 would have expressed the point clearly is not just transparently pretentious, it makes the read extraordinarily frustrating as you have to spend energy figuring out what the author meant by his gibberish.

Thus, instead of "the text-move is still considered solid notwithstanding the recent fashionability of 4...Ba6," we get the following: "However, for all that, it would feel like a blow to the prestige of the Queen's Indian if the unpretentious text-move were to be found wanting and fortunately it is fair to say that this, so far as I know, has never been seriously suggested." And so it goes, Qa4 is "emphatically not a preface to Qxa7," and you can only scratch your head over what "a soothing influence on the central light squares" means. I rate this book a very conflicted 3 stars instead of 5 because, although I love the great material in here, the effort required of the reader to translate each sentence of gobbledygook into a coherent thought ends up making you want to throw the book against the wall.

A great find for both the skeptic and the believer

Missing Time, by Bud Hopkins is not only mind boggling, and intelligently written, but it also speaks to both minds, the skeptic, and the believer. Bud Hopkins backs up his research and his theories and is clearly passionate about his work. I myself being a believer find this a must read,

After reading this I felt like a first year med student that diagnoses themselves with every disease. Do I have any missing time in my life? Of course not, THANK GOD! Whew!
For the people in Budd's book, I can't imagine having to learn where that time really went. What they went through. And how they could move forward after discovering what happened.
I get scared on roller-coasters, but I can decide NOT to go on them. The people in Budd's book had no say. There is no free will. And nobody can help them. I get caught up with these facts. Great reading!

Important Book.

In Missing Time, Budd Hopkins does something more writers on the subject of UFOs should do: he considers evidence rather than just rant about aliens and flying saucers. He investigates a phenomenon common to a number of people, why they seem to black out for hours at a time and later find themselves safe and sound with no recollection of how they got there or what they'd been doing. These are average people with no other apparent similarities.
When Budd employs hypnosis to enhance memory recall, shocking details and incredible similarities of the events that occur during these "missing time" episodes is revealed. Believe it or not; it's up to you. But the subject is fascinating, the evidence compelling, and Budd Hopkins does a fine job of reporting the mystery. This book is a must read for all UFO buffs and debunkers alike. --Christopher Bonn Jonnes, author of Wake Up Dead.

About the Author

DEBASHIS CHATTERJEE has taught leadership classes at Harvard University and at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) in Calcutta, Lucknow, and Kozhikode for nearly two decades. He has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship twice for predoctoral and postdoctoral work at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. The author of six books, including Leading Consciously and Break Free, that have been translated into several languages, Dr. Chatterjee has trained more than 10,000 managers at Fortune 100 corporations globally and has served as a leadership coach to political leaders and CEOs of major Indian organizations. He has acted as dean of an international business school in Singapore. A pioneer in the field of Asian models in leadership, Dr. Chatterjee is currently the Director of the IIM Kozhikode and serves as independent director on the boards of several multinational and Indian companies. Good for business leaders

The author of this book has studied over 100 commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita, and is most interested in creating a "transcreation" rather than a translation of the original text. Each chapter of the book corresponds to one of the 18 chapters of the Bhagavad-Gita.

The book contains some very beautiful writing. Here is an example: "Stillness is strength. Stillness is the power-point behind intense action. The eye of the cyclone is the stillness at the center of the storm."

There is lots of discussion of higher values, the search for one's true self, the desire to fulfill one's spiritual potential and rise above the clamor of the senses and the separate ego, etc. At times the writing is beautiful, colorful and inspirational:

"Where does...equality of vision come from? It comes from the ability to see the same human spirit dispersed in several forms across the dividing lines of caste,
creed, designations or degrees of accomplishment. When our meditation deepens, we are able to experience this unity in divinity on a daily basis."

Other times the writing becomes dense and wordy. Very few Sanskrit terms are mentioned, however, at times the author does occasionally invent his own words: "workship" and "awareness-centric" being a couple of examples.

My main challenge with this book has been to equate the message of the Bhagavad Gita with the ideals of big business. In a discussion of "holding onto faith," William Wrigley of the Wrigley's chewing gum fortune is held up as a shining example - in this case, of "faith in the product." On the next page is the example of Mahatma Gandhi who was also holding onto faith, but faith in nonviolence. This odd juxtaposition and others like it took a little getting used to.

On the subject of austerity, Ammadeo Peter Giannini, the founder of Bank of America (which along with TransAmerica amassed 7 billion dollars in his lifetime) is lauded for his valiant efforts to resist becoming a millionaire (by giving to charity) before his death in 1949. Noble though he was in many ways, this is hardly rings true as an example of austerity.

Also, I was surprised and rather disappointed to find that very few actual passages from the Gita quoted here. I guess given the title, I expected something resembling a translation of the original text. This book is most definitely not that.

Still, there are very beautiful moments throughout the book, and I am sure its positive messages will have much to offer to people in business leadership positions, provided that the book's ideas
align with their basic spiritual beliefs.

Timeless Lessons from the Ancients

One of my favorite quotations is from Walt Kelly's cartoon character Pogo, "We have met the enemy and it is us." But the idea is certainly not new. Sophocles, who lived from around 495 B.C. - 429 B. C. first captured the thought when he wrote, "The greatest griefs are those we cause ourselves."

I believe there is a tendency to think that we need to have the latest cutting-edge ideas to get ahead in business and life. But as shown from the above quotations, the ideas that endure the test of time are the ones that can have the greatest impact on our businesses and our lives. We should not be looking for some new fad ideas or the latest new technique to guide us. It is the proven, time-tested ideas that can be relied on to serve as our North Star - to guide our decisions so that we get the best results.

Timeless Leadership, By Debashis Chatterjee, takes 18 lessons from The Bhagavad Gita and shows us how these ancient lessons apply to the modern workplace as well as to modern life.

In case you are not familiar with the Bhagavad Gita, this is a spiritual classic from India, written between the fifth and fourth centuries BCE. The setting is a battlefield struggle by the warrior Arjuna. At first, the struggle seems to be with the opponent but eventually we see that the real struggle is internal. The Lord Krishna acts as a mentor to Arjuna - giving him advice on self-development. It is the classic struggles we all go through but by using the Sutras from the Bhagavad Gita, the author is able to show more clearly how these struggles apply to life today.

There are two things you will get from this book. First you will gain a much better appreciation for the Bhagavad Gita. The author has taken selected passages and brought out the lessons using contemporary language so that the message is clear and impactful.

The second major thing you will learn are the 18 powerful leadership concepts that are timeless. There are many leadership books currently advancing the idea that leadership starts within. But you will see that this lesson was first advanced in the Gita, "But the real war is inside Arjuna's mind. All conflicts reside in the content of our own mind. It is not the mountains we conquer but ourselves."

These are very powerful and timeless leadership concepts. The author very skillfully uses the Sutras from the Bhahavad Gita to deliver these concepts. But he also weaves in real life examples from today's business world that illustrate how the principle applies today.

The book does require some active thought on the part of the reader. If you are not willing to invest some time and energy studying the concepts, you will probably not gain the full value of this book.

If you are fascinated by learning from the ancients and seeing how these timeless, enduring principles apply today you should enjoy and profit from this book.

Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Leader

The idea of bringing ancient Eastern philosophy into the consciousness of today's leaders is a brilliant one. I have not given much thought to the Bhagavad Gita since my undergraduate days and was intrigued by the notion that its teachings might, as with the the Samurai teachings in The Book of Five Rings, enlighten and enrich modern leaders. Chatterjee has done an excellent job of matching Krishna's teachings to Arjuna with contemporary leadership situations. His examples are relevant and current.
Although there is much to praise here and many lessons to be learned, this is probably a book best read in small sections with time for reflection between each reading. It is carefully constructed, yet somehow not compelling. It defies the fast read - perhaps a plus in most leaders' rush onto the next great thing. Timeless Leadership, the book, is like the subject it addresses. It requires effort to reach mastery.
