Handbook for practitioners

Keith Johnstone's earlier work, IMPRO, has influenced and will continue to influence the way acting and improvisation for the theatre are taught. IMPRO is a book not only about theatre and improv, but about teaching and human interaction, loaded with insights making that book highly suitable for the general reader.
This follow-up is more specialized: a handbook for putting IMPRO into practice, including detailed improv structures for performance and for rehearsal, and chapters on how to teach these games. Sample run lists and notes from performances impart Johnstone's experiences, trials and errors over many years teaching in several countries. The book is exhaustive and beautifully written, but for the general reader, IMPRO is more appropriate.
One disappointment about the book is some sloppy copy-editing. It is rife with typos, of the sort that are not picked out by a computer spell-checker since the typos form actual words.
The title IMPRO FOR STORYTELLERS is, as Tim Sheppard pointed out below, potentially misleading. This is not a book that will help a solo performer generate material, though some of the exercises within can be translated for that purpose. Johnstone's concern is that improv not be restricted to a form of "light entertainment" (think "Who's Line Is It Anyway?"), but as a way of generating narrative and using it to explore human relationships.

The Second Coming of Keith...

This book, in contrast with his last one, is much more linear and down-to-earth, but every bit as powerful. He dives straight into 'how-to' mode, decribing his own version of improv theater. This might be a little tedious for those not interested in licencing a "Theatersports" venue in their own town, but hang in there. He quickly gets to the meat of simply creating good improv, what behaviours and actions get you there, and how to sustain it. This is a book 100% designed to assist the improviser, both the individual, as well as the 'group'. He even goes so far as to provide shortcut lists in the appendix for use in performance! Keith Johnstone is a visonary, and I'm convinced that whatever theater will look like in the coming years, he will have inspired much of it.

Whatever your interest, this book is right for you - buy it!

Not many practical manuals are also fun to just read, but this one is - funny, incisive, witty, philosophical and more. It is tremendously useful in many ways. I'm involved in applying impro, but not for Theatre Sports or comedy impro, yet this book is invaluable. My only annoyance is that it should be called Storytelling for Improvisors instead. If you are a storyteller hoping to learn how to improvise stories, this book will not address that directly for you, although if you absorb all the insight you'll get a lot of practical help. Johnstone's comments and analysis are very thought provoking, and reveal a great deal about human nature and the way our minds (and inhibitions) work. Any psychologist could learn a lot here too. If you are after a bumper book of games, go no further - this details a large number, but also with expert advice on how to teach and run the games, including warnings about all the variations that don't work.

An action novel for Animal Lovers! Recommended even for the non-military enthusiasts...

Very few action novelists have been able to grip my attention the way Robbins does. I have managed to stay with the PJs through their various missions with captivating story-lines and realistic characters. Through the scope of "serve and protect," Robbins brings us very human characters with both endearing and frustrating personality complexes. With illegal animal trafficking and poaching at a high, the topic and breadth of the book covers many aspects of the black market trade, keeping the characters directly connected and giving the reader the license to generate opinions about character and place. Elements of love, greed, and betrayal all percolate on the open savanna.

Another PJ winner by David L. Robbins

Once again David L Robbins did not disappoint his readers. The Devil's Horn places the readers in the action, allows the use of their own imagination while surrounding them with accurate geographic description. The readers become co-authors using their own input to flesh out the story. Tight writing with eye pleasing phrases are trademarks of Robbins' works. As with the two preceding novels about the USAF Pararescue teams, The Devil's Waters and The Empty Quarter, this latest novel is another winner. Read the entire series and you'll search for all the novels by this talented author.

The Journey songbook is the companion sheet music collection to Greg Maroney s 2010 CD release by the same name. Most of the eleven pieces have been transcribed note-for-note and a few have small changes for clarity and playability (I know this because I proofed the sheet music). The pieces appear in the book in the same order that they appear on the CD, so it is possible to achieve the same seamless flow of the album at your own piano. Maroney is an amazing pianist, so this is not the easiest sheet music out there, but none of the music is impossibly difficult either. A few of the pieces would be playable for an upper-intermediate player, but most are more early-advanced to advanced. There is a nice range of key signatures from A minor (no sharps or flats) to F# major (six sharps) with just about everything in between. There are a few reaches of more than an octave, but pianists with smaller hands can always roll those chords or shorten them (there are not enough of these to present a problem). The transcriptions have a nice, roomy layout with very clear notes and lots of white background, making them easy to read and understand quickly. Dynamics and expression are clearly marked, and a few tricky passages have fingering. The length of the pieces ranges from five pages to fourteen. I have been a big fan of Greg's music for a lot of years, and have taught many of his pieces to my advancing students. It is such a pleasure to sit for an hour or so playing his music and discovering how he plays the pieces himself. Greg's sheet music is available from his website, and I recommend it very highly!

Greg Maroney is a pianist and composer of classically influenced New Age solo piano music. His music is emotionally rich yet peaceful, capturing the beauty and majesty of life. He can be compared to other masters of contemporary piano such as Wayne Gratz, David Lanz, Michael Dulin, Liz Story, David Nevue, and Jim Brickman. Greg currently lives with his wife on a small farm in south central Pennsylvania. They have chickens, raise a great deal of their own food, and seek to live peacefully and in harmony with nature.

"The Journey" songbook is the companion sheet music collection to Greg Maroney's 2010 CD release by the same name. Most of the eleven pieces have been transcribed note-for-note and a few have small changes for clarity and playability (I know this because I proofed the sheet music). The pieces appear in the book in the same order that they appear on the CD, so it is possible to achieve the same seamless flow of the album at your own piano.

Maroney is an amazing pianist, so this is not the easiest sheet music out there, but none of the music is impossibly difficult either. A few of the pieces would be playable for an upper-intermediate player, but most are more early-advanced to advanced. There is a nice range of key signatures from A minor (no sharps or flats) to F# major (six sharps) with just about everything in between. There are a few reaches of more than an octave, but pianists with smaller hands can always roll those chords or shorten them (there are not enough of these to present a problem). The transcriptions have a nice, roomy layout with very clear notes and lots of white background, making them easy to read and understand quickly. Dynamics and expression are clearly marked, and a few tricky passages have fingering. There are one-page samples of each of the pieces on Maroney's website ([...]), and those will give you a very clear idea of what to expect. The length of the pieces ranges from five pages to fourteen.

I have been a big fan of Greg's music for a lot of years, and have taught many of his pieces to my advancing students. It is such a pleasure to sit for an hour or so playing his music and discovering how he plays the pieces himself. I recommend it very highly!

A thoughtful and entertaining addition to the series.

Much better than the first book of the series, 'The Lost Command' adds more background to Captain Maddox and the ship's AI, as well as the burgeoning romance with Meta. We finally get to meet Dr. Ludendorff (I must be just as smart as him because I figured out the ships AIs problem before he came aboard) and he gets some of the ships problems fixed.

Personally, I think this is Vaughn Heppner's best book. His writing style and thought processes telling the story have really matured. After 'Star Viking' I was ready to write him off as a hack, but THE LOST STARSHIP series has changed my mind.

If you haven't read the first episode, that is ok the book gives enough background to get you up to speed. Also, the story is complete, no stupid cliffhangers.

I highly recommend THE LOST COMMAND..

Better Than the First Book "Lost Starship"

I am at a loss for words! The difference between this book and the first book of the series, “The Lost Starship” is astounding! This book was a fantastic book to read. It made sense. The author finally managed to put some sense into the actions of his main character, Captain Maddox, and stopped making him sound like an idiot. He actually put some “humanity” into Captain Maddox and made him act like a normal person albeit a very smart person.

I’m still don’t understand the rank structure in this book. A Navy Captain ranks just below an Admiral. Will, there could be a Commodore in-between them in time of war, but usually a Navy Captain is also the commander of most Naval large and important Naval vessels. They have a lot of experience since you don’t make Captain until well past usually 20 years. I can’t remember how long Maddox has been in the Star Watch Intelligence Service but he seems to have been around for awhile. They are treating the rank of Captain in this book as one step above a Lieutenant which is crazy. Valerie seems to have some service time too and she has been promoted to Captain also hoping to command a Star War starship which as a Captain she should. Instead, she gets assigned to Captain Maddox and is busted down to a Lieutenant! What happened to the rank of Commander or even Lt Commandeer? It would sure have cleared things up if those ranks had been included since that’s what most military readers would have expected.

Ok so on with the book. Maddox finally gets back aboard the Victory and he’s place in command but the alien AI hasn’t quite gotten his senses back and will only allow Maddox to command through him and only if it will achieve the AI’s objectives. The AI has a name now, Driving Force Galyan, but that doesn’t seem to change much. The banter between Maddox and Galyan has improved quite a bit with their discussions seeming to fit into the mission. It improves greatly later on when they wipe the AI’s core and rid it of a virus.

So, the purpose of this book it to rescue the Fifth Fleet which has fought the New Men but was getting annihilated and then decided to flee to fight another day. That decision was probably the correct one but it’s going to take the Fifth Fleet several months to reach a place where they might be able to jump back to Earth. Unfortunately, the New Men will have several months to fix their star ships and will be waiting to destroy the rest of the Fifth Fleet. But, Captain Maddox and his crew must bring the Victory to the aide of the Fifth Fleet and do so with the Victory’s advanced weaponry fully functional!

This book was pretty exciting. The writing was certainly better than in the first book and a lot of things were explained about Captain Maddox and his crew. They all got around to figuring out they had to work together and even the ship AI started cooperating even though he tried very hard to act like he wasn’t.

I think the encounters with the New Men turned out logically, although the New Men did set several traps that the Victory and Captain Maddox barely got out of. Meta did have much of a part in this book but she did provide some kind of love interest for Maddox to prove that he wasn’t just a cold hearted, ah, dude! I thought that was possible. Still, what I couldn’t figure out is why Professor Ludendorff so eagerly joined the Victory’s crew after he said he wasn’t going to board that vessel when he first discovered it. That was never explained as far as I know. It’s also interesting to have to write in another character that’s even more intelligent than Captain Maddox just so someone can figure everything out. Of course the author found that having a highly intelligent Professor around allowed him to fix things without explaining why just because we wouldn’t understand the explanation. That’s a good trick.

Ok, I change my mind. This series is now much better than I expected it to get. I guess there could be another book since the Fifth Fleet hasn’t returned to Earth and the New Men are still a threat. So, if the author can write a third book as well as this one, then please do. Just remember, I and other readers don’t know how a book will turn out until we’ve read them! Not fair!

I am impressed with the improvement between this book and the first book of the series, “The Lost Starship”. This book was a real page turner. The author provided insight into the actions of his main character, Captain Maddox, and stopped making him sound like an idiot. He fleshed out Captain Maddox’s character and made him act like a normal person albeit a very smart person.
I really don’t understand the rank structure in this book. A Navy Captain ranks just below an Admiral, then a rear Admiral then a Commodore in-between them. You normally don’t make Captain until well past usually 20 years. (Although in time of war it is not unheard of. I can’t remember how long Maddox has been in the Star Watch Intelligence Service but he seems to have been around for a while. At one point in this book ,the rank of Captain as one step above a Lieutenant, then later the marine asked to call him commander since a Marine Captain in a lower rank (a marine can’t deal with a rank Of Navy Captain? Besides that the master of a ship is always called Captain regardless of rank. Valerie seems to have some service time too and she has been promoted to Captain also hoping to command a Star War starship which as a Captain she should. Instead, she gets assigned to Captain Maddox and is busted down to a Lieutenant! What happened to the rank of Commander or even Lt Commandeer? this book is a gem;great teaching text.

Indiana-based Hackett Publishing is a leading press for the humanitites disciplines.They specialize in producing inexpensive paperback editions of classic philosophical and literary works,as well as quality materials to support humanities teaching.Pojman's(pronounced "poy-man") ethics text/anthology does not disappiont us fans of Hackett.The book is .. a 333-page text paperback. It is divided into eight parts,such as relativism,egoism,values,utilitarianism,deontology,virtues,and religious morality.The text can be taught in Pojman's order,or the instructor can "jump around" at will as each part is autonomous.
There is a nice balance of thinkers from across the tradition.
Ancient and modern thinkers included are
Plato,Aristotle,Aquinas,Mill,Hobbes,Kant,and others.Contemporary writers include Ayn Rand,James Rachels,Derek
Parfit,Johnathan
Bennett,W.D. Ross,and Alasdair
McIntyre.
Each selection is roughly article-length,ideal for teaching over one class or one week of classes.Two minor criticisms:for ethics classes,a section on the free-will problem and an introduction to non-occidental moral theories would be useful.These are clearly sins of omission-for what it is,this text is unsurpassable for quality and value.A note of thanks is due to Professor Pojman and,once again,to the folks at Hackett.
